2025 Fall Intern - Machine learning for Generative AI
South San Francisco, United States
Genentech
Breakthrough science. One moment, one day, one person at a time.Department Summary
The Department of Translational Medicine leads biomarker discovery and development efforts for programs in Early Stage Research through Phase III clinical trials. We use relevant pharmacodynamic biomarkers to evaluate target-engagement and mechanism of action of candidate therapies as well as prognostic biomarkers to guide patient selection.
Our department is responsible for developing biomarker strategies, designing and implementing biomarker assays, and interpreting biomarker results. Biomarker team leaders within the department provide scientific leadership on biomarkers for clinical trials ranging from early proof-of-concept through global Phase III. We are currently seeking a highly-motivated intern to provide computational support on clinical development projects in Lupus. Specifically, the candidate would support the data analysis of pharmacodynamic and clinical biomarker data from various clinical studies to understand the investigational drug’s impact on relevant immunological and pathological processes.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, California, on site.
The Opportunity
We seek a highly motivated intern to join the Computational Sciences organization in Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED). Our group is dedicated to leveraging AI to accelerate drug discovery and target discovery efforts. Our work spans across autonomous agent design and evaluation, large-scale foundation models, with a strong emphasis on scientific discovery, drug development, and complex decision-making pipelines.
Responsibilities:
Research, design, and implement novel cutting-edge evaluations for agentic systems with applications to drug discovery.
Drive research on (large-scale) generative AI methods solving computational biology challenges.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate LLM based agents and deploy it into impactful applications for drug discovery and target discovery.
Opportunity to contribute to publications, presenting results at internal and external scientific conferences.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks or 6 months, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in September.
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
