Position Summary:

For our discovery proteomics group at Lilly Oncology in South San Francsico, we are looking for a new team member who is enthusiastic about performing discovery proteomics in spatially defined compartments of tissues and/or cultured cells.

This position presents an opportunity to work within a dynamic discovery research team dedicated to analyzing proteomic biology for genetically defined oncology targets. The ideal candidate is someone who is confident working with mass spectrometry techniques, enjoys technical and biological challenges and is familiar with sample preparation for proteomic analysis such as tissue preparation for protein characterization, biophysical experiments, laboratory automation and handling data analysis statistics of results. 

The qualified candidate will have experience with basic chemistry/biology laboratory practices, is knowledgeable with mass spectrometry and other methods and passionate about working in a growing dynamic group focused on discovery oncology research. 

The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative team of scientists with expertise in protein production, cell culture, chemistry, biochemistry, structure, and biophysics, supporting hit-to-lead and lead-ID phases of our oncology drug programs. The candidate will have opportunities to expand their knowledge of cutting-edge techniques, working with state-of-the-art instrumentation and to learn and further develop existing technical expertise in protein biochemical and biophysical characterization.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of cells and tissues for immunohistochemical staining and subsequent isolation via laser-microdissection.
  • Knowledge and experience with quality assurance related to all the following: specimen fixation, processing, microtomy; reagent selection, preparation, storage, disposal; method selection, validation, documentation; quality control; safety.
  • Purification of proteins from a variety of biological samples such as cultured cells or tissue preparations to support biophysical/biochemical studies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the company to ensure timely delivery of assay data. Communicate and present data to a wider audience of the team and outside collaborators.
  • Adapt to highly dynamic project priorities, with diligent and rapid communication of scientific results and insights to the team.
  • Participate in discussions with vendors for outsourced services and studies.
  • Learn and develop technical expertise in protein biochemical and biophysical characterization.
  • Develop and continually advance one’s knowledge base on genetically targeted drugs and structure-based drug design.

Basic Requirements:

  • BS with 4+ years of relevant experience (academic research setting and/or industry)
  • General knowledge of mass spectrometry and familiarity with current instrumentation, preferably with Thermo Scientific or Bruker instruments.
  • Ability to use cryostat, microtome, tissue processor, and stainer including immunohistochemistry platform.
  • Hands-on experience with widefield microscopy and laser-capture microdissection.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate and interact well with colleagues, vendors, contractors, scientific advisors, and staff at all levels.

Additional Preferences:

  • Highly organized with excellent analytical, documentation and multi-tasking skills.
  • Committed to staying current with the latest scientific breakthroughs in structure-based drug design and structural biology.
  • Knowledge in statistical computation like basic skills in R or Python would be ideal.
  • Experience in identification of spatially defined areas of interest in tissues and cultured cells via various immunohistochemical methods is a plus.
  • Expertise in other methods of enzymology or biophysical characterization and structural biology is a plus.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$69,000 - $154,000

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
