Department: Data Analytics / BI Team

Job Overview:

The Power BI Developer is responsible for creating, maintaining, and optimizing data visualizations and dashboards using Power BI for the company’s SaaS clients. This role involves working closely with business users and data engineers to understand data requirements, build effective data models, and deliver insightful, interactive dashboards and reports that drive business decisions. The Power BI Developer will be instrumental in transforming raw data into actionable insights through elegant, scalable, and efficient visual representations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Dashboard and Report Development:

Design and Develop Power BI Dashboards:

· Create interactive and visually appealing Power BI dashboards and reports that provide clear insights for business users.

· Develop visualizations and KPIs based on user requirements, making complex data easily understandable and actionable.

Create Custom Data Visualizations:

· Utilize Power BI’s functionality to create custom charts, graphs, and visuals tailored to specific business needs.

· Use Power BI Embedded for SaaS clients, integrating the visualizations within their platform environment.

Build and Maintain Data Models:

· Design efficient data models within Power BI to support self-service reporting for users.

· Optimize data models for performance and scalability, ensuring that large datasets are handled efficiently.

2. Data Integration and Collaboration:

Collaborate with Data Engineers:

· Work closely with the data engineering team to ensure that data sources are integrated properly into Power BI, and that the underlying infrastructure supports report generation.

· Ensure data from multiple sources (e.g., Xero, CRM systems, third-party platforms) is merged and transformed correctly for reporting.

ETL Processes and Data Preparation:

· Collaborate on ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to ensure that data is clean, structured, and optimized for reporting purposes.

· Perform data cleansing and transformation using Power Query or other tools as required.

3. Performance Optimization:

Optimize Power BI Performance:

· Improve the performance of Power BI reports and dashboards by optimizing queries, managing data refresh schedules, and using appropriate data modeling techniques.

· Ensure that reports load quickly and perform well, even when dealing with large datasets.

Develop and Maintain DAX Queries:

· Write and optimize DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) queries to build complex calculations, measures, and KPIs that provide critical insights.

4. User Support and Documentation:

Provide End-User Support:

· Work with end users to ensure they can effectively use Power BI reports and dashboards, providing training and support where necessary.

· Address any issues with existing reports and dashboards, ensuring quick resolution of bugs or performance issues.

Document Solutions and Best Practices:

· Maintain clear documentation of Power BI reports, data models, and ETL processes to ensure knowledge transfer and system scalability.

· Establish best practices for Power BI development, including data modeling standards and visualization techniques.

5. Continuous Improvement:

Stay Up to Date with Power BI Features:

· Keep abreast of new Power BI features, updates, and capabilities, and continuously apply this knowledge to improve the company's reporting and analytics solutions.

Collaborate on BI Strategy:

· Contribute to the company’s overall Business Intelligence (BI) strategy by providing input on new tools, technologies, and best practices that can enhance the company’s reporting capabilities.

Key Skills & Competencies:

1. Technical Expertise:

Power BI Proficiency:

· Expertise in Power BI, including creating reports, dashboards, and data models.

· Experience with Power BI Embedded and its use within SaaS platforms is a strong plus.

DAX (Data Analysis Expressions):

· Strong proficiency in DAX for creating complex calculations and measures.

Power Query:

· Experience with Power Query for data transformation and cleansing.

ETL Processes:

· Understanding of ETL processes, with the ability to integrate, cleanse, and transform data from various sources.

2. Data Modeling & Integration:

Data Modeling:

· Strong understanding of data modeling principles, including creating relationships between tables, optimizing model performance, and creating reusable data structures.

SQL:

· Basic to intermediate proficiency in SQL for querying databases and extracting relevant data.

Data Integration:

· Ability to collaborate with data engineers and other teams to integrate data from multiple sources, including cloud-based systems, databases, and third-party applications.

3. Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:

Data Analysis:

· Strong analytical skills to understand business requirements and convert them into meaningful data visualizations and reports.

Problem-Solving:

· Ability to troubleshoot issues with reports, dashboards, and data connections, identifying and implementing solutions efficiently.

4. Communication and Collaboration:

User Interaction:

· Excellent communication skills to gather requirements from business users and explain complex technical concepts in a non-technical way.

Collaboration:

· Strong team player who can work with data engineers, business stakeholders, and other departments to deliver cohesive solutions.

5. Performance Optimization:

Performance Tuning:

· Ability to optimize reports and dashboards to ensure high performance, especially when working with large datasets and complex queries.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

· 2-4 years of experience working as a Power BI Developer or in a related role (e.g., Business Intelligence Developer, Data Analyst).

· Experience working with SaaS platforms or data-heavy environments is a plus.

· Familiarity with Xero or other accounting software integrations is a plus.

Performance Metrics:

· Report and Dashboard Accuracy: High levels of accuracy in data visualizations and reporting.

· Efficiency in Development: Timely delivery of reports and dashboards, meeting user requirements and deadlines.

· User Satisfaction: Positive feedback from users regarding the functionality, usability, and value of Power BI reports.

· Performance: Optimized performance of reports and dashboards with minimal load times and efficient queries.
