As an Applied Scientist, you will conduct and guide algorithmic-research driven software development. We process millions of customer orders every week and our systems make fundamental scheduling, planning, and routing decisions within our warehouses. You will be improving the warehouse efficiency by solving a stochastic optimization problem, at the crossroads of combinatorial optimization and data-science. Our research pipeline enables fast incremental improvements which together with the scale of our decisions has a direct impact on the productivity of our warehouses.

WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED

  • Contribute to  research, design and implementation of algorithms to improve our algorithmic framework

  • Deliver end-to-end solutions and set the bar for the whole development cycle that includes research, prototyping, implementing production software, as well as testing and operating the highly available production system

  • Influence our research and development methodologies to foster a scalable and data-driven architecture

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Master or PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, or another quantitative field together with industry experience in algorithm-related software development in Java, Kotlin, Python or similar

  • Working experience in state-of-the-art methods in software design, architecture and distributed system, e.g. microservices and RESTful APIs

  • Applied knowledge of advanced algorithmic techniques (e.g. from combinatorics, graph theory) or mathematical modeling (e.g. from operations research, probability theory, statistics), together with corresponding applied research experience

  • Ability to work, collaborate and communicate in an agile and cross-functional team with engineers, product owners and other applied scientists

You can find on this google doc a stochastic optimization problem that showcases the type of problems we solve. If you like kaggle-type problems, send us your solution to the problem instead of uploading a cover letter.

PERKS AT WORK

  • Culture of trust, empowerment and constructive feedback, open source commitment, meetups, game nights, 70+ internal technical and fun guilds, knowledge sharing through tech talks, internal tech academy and blogs, product demos, parties & events

  • Competitive salary, employee share shop, 40% Zalando shopping discount, discounts from external partners, centrally located offices, public transport discounts, municipality services, great IT equipment, flexible working times, additional holidays and volunteering time off, free beverages and fruits, diverse sports and health offerings

  • Extensive onboarding, mentoring and personal development opportunities and an international team of experts

  • Relocation assistance for internationals, PME family service and parent & child rooms* (*available only in select locations)
