Job Description

Who is VTS?

Vector Technology Solutions (VTS) is a subsidiary of Vector, New Zealand’s largest distributor of electricity and gas. Our flagship platform, Diverge, is a cloud-native, serverless energy data platform developed in collaboration with AWS. It helps utilities manage smart meter and IoT data, integrate distributed energy resources, improve network visibility, and accelerate electrification.

Data science is at the core of Diverge—transforming granular telemetry into insights for forecasting, anomaly detection, and grid optimisation. Our team builds scalable intelligence that supports a more distributed, resilient, and sustainable energy future. We’re expanding our team and looking for a skilled, thoughtful Data Scientist to join us.

On a typical week, you can expect to:

· Design and deliver scalable analytical models that power core Diverge features like phase detection, voltage analysis, and anomaly detection.

· Work closely with Product and Engineering to embed models into cloud-native, production-ready systems.

· Validate model performance using real-world utility data across diverse conditions.

· Translate complex energy network concepts into actionable diagnostics and insights.

· Support the productisation of data science through retraining, versioning, telemetry, and event-driven integration.

· Drive innovation through research and experimentation, keeping Diverge at the cutting edge of network analytics.

What you’ll bring:

Technical Leadership: A track record of leading the development of data science features within products, solving complex problems while working within real-world platform constraints.

Applied Data Science Expertise: Experience in machine learning, time-series modelling, and developing production-grade analytics.

Cloud & Deployment Skills: Hands-on experience with modern data and ML infrastructure, including CI/CD pipelines and tools for scalable model deployment (e.g. SageMaker, Lambda, Glue).

Collaboration & Mentoring: Ability to mentor others and foster strong cross-functional collaboration to ensure high-quality outcomes.

Business-Aligned Communication: Capable of translating technical solutions into business value and aligning work with product direction.

Education: Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Domain Knowledge (Nice to Have): Familiarity with smart meter data, electricity networks, or telemetry in a cloud-native environment.

Why Join VTS?

At VTS, we offer more than just a job—we provide opportunities to work on impactful projects, collaborate with leading technology firms, and contribute to shaping the future of energy.
