WORK LOCATION
- This position will be based out of the Energy Center in Birmingham, AL and is required to be in the office 4 days per week.
JOB SUMMARY
Structuring and Analysis supports Commercial Operations and Planning, Southern Wholesale Energy, and operating companies (Customers) by providing solutions to complex problems through cutting edge analytics.
This position is responsible for leading the team that provides advanced modeling and quantitative and economic analysis for all Commercial Operations, including Unit Commitment and Dispatch, Power Trading, Gas Trading & Operations, Gas Procurement, Coal Procurement and Logistics, Fuel Oil Procurement and Optimization, Fuel Hedging, and Southern Wholesale Energy (SWE). The team uses production cost models and develops in-house statistical/econometric models to provide deterministic and stochastic forecasts of the future state of the world and uses these forecasts to drive better risk-adjusted business decisions.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creatively respond to new and challenging problems in a timely and effective manner
- Coach and develop team members and provide leadership and input on their projects
- Effective performance management
- Oversee and direct others to achieve organizational goals
- As a working manger perform robust quantitative analyses for our customers that:
- Provide risk-adjusted forecasts and views of the world that lead to a competitive advantage in the wholesale market place
- Capture the risk of commercial activity utilizing statistical and production cost models
- Evaluate and propose strategies to help mitigate risk using both standard and complex market instruments
- Lead the development of new tools to solve ever-changing problems in a complex industry
- Evaluate operational and market data to identify opportunities for optimization
- Provide deal pricing, structuring support, and competitive intelligence for SWE and Term Trading
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- A degree in an analytical field is required. Some examples include, but are not limited to, quantitative finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering
- An advanced degree in these areas, an MBA, or years of relevant experience is a plus
Experience/Skills:
- Experience in a related business function in the energy industry is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of production cost modeling, financial modeling, risk analysis, statistics and econometrics, unit commitment & dispatch theory, power trading in ISO and bi-lateral markets, natural gas markets and operations, hedging, regulatory environments is desired.
- Proficiency with standard business and analytical software such as Microsoft Office and Excel is required
- Proficiency with mathematical or statistical software packages such as MATLAB and R is desired
- Proficiency with SQL or programming languages (like C++ or Python) is a plus
- Ability to build productive relationships and work in a fast-paced, competitive environment while handling multiple assignments
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a strong customer service approach.
- Effective leadership of a team and the creation of an environment where team members can develop and be successful.
- Creative and critical thinking when faced with new problems and challenges, along with desire for continual learning are required.
