About the role
As Head of Data, you will play a pivotal role in helping to drive ARO’s operational performance and shape our business strategy. You will develop a compelling data strategy to help ARO achieve its objectives, and realise the strategy through the design, implementation, and ongoing development of our data and business intelligence platforms, whilst ensuring compliance, security and privacy.
You will need a flair for problem-solving and work as a hands-on contributor to develop solutions with the business. You will be responsible for managing and mentoring an experienced analyst, guiding their development, and ensuring their performance aligns with the team’s goals.
Key objectives of the role:
- Align ARO’s data strategy to business objectives.
- Develop and maintain ARO’s data warehouse and self-service analytics platform.
- Provide governance for ARO data, understanding key data flows, and identifying data quality issues that the business needs to address through process improvement.
- Ensure the integrity, security and compliance of ARO’s data.
Pease note that this is a Hybrid role with onsite requirement 3 days a week. You must be able to commute to the office in Farnborough.
What you’ll do
Key Responsibilities:
Team management and coaching
• Lead, mentor and support the development of one direct report.
• Provide management, by following people processes including setting clear objectives, conducting performance reviews, and fostering a high-performance team ethic.
Data Strategy & Architecture
• Develop and execute a comprehensive data strategy aligned with ARO’s objectives.
• Define and implement data governance policies and procedures, establishing standards for data collection, storage, and security Data Governance
• Be the subject matter expert for ARO’s business data model.
• Maintain data governance frameworks to ensure data integrity, security, and compliance.
• Identify key data quality issues that the business needs to fix through process improvement.
• Participate in systems and process improvements to ensure and enhance the integrity of data flows and data quality.
Data Management and Analytics Platform
• Ensure efficient data management practices, including data warehousing, ETL processes, and data integration.
• Extend ARO’s data warehouse into the cloud.
• Develop ARO data analytics platform (PowerBI) for the business to access data, enabling users to generate actionable insights and support business decision-making.
• Promote and develop self-service capabilities and automation to fulfil business user data requests, dashboards and reports.
Development
• Work with senior stakeholders to understand business challenges, define requirements and deliver high quality solutions.
• Manage a development roadmap that delivers improvements to data quality, accessibility and architecture.
• Manage a backlog process to deliver fixes, minor changes and key improvements.
• Define a request and development process to gather requirements, develop, test and release.
Leadership & Collaboration
• Mentor and develop the data team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
• Work collaboratively with ARO teams to understand their data needs and provide support.
Requirements
What we are looking for?
Essential
• 8 years of experience in data roles including data management, data engineering, analytics, or data science, with at least 2 years in a management role.
• Experience with managing cloud platforms (e.g. Azure) and designing data architecture.
• Hand-on development skills including data processing, manipulation and visualisation, and fluency in common languages e.g. Python and SQL.
• Understanding of business processes including sales, finance, operations and billing.
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities.
• Analytical, inquisitive, methodical, with a high attention to detail
• Ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field.
• Understanding of ERP and finance systems and experience of interfacing with them
• Prior experience in the telecommunications & technology sector.
• Knowledge of third-party tools e.g. Databricks, Snowflake, Redshift
