The Manager, Data Governance & Retention manages the execution of the enterprise data-governance framework, administers data-lifecycle, retention policies, and oversees the Atlan data catalog. Reporting to the Senior Director of Data Management and directing a Senior Data Governance Analyst, the role supports the Data Governance Council, partnering with cross-functional business, legal, security, and engineering teams to implement its decisions, embed policy compliance in day-to-day processes, and uphold U.S. federal and state privacy laws (e.g., CCPA, CPA, HIPAA). Success is measured by demonstrable policy adoption, regulatory compliance, and improved data quality and discoverability across the organization.

***This is a remote position that can be home based anywhere within the United States. ***

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports the Data Governance Council, championing its roadmap and swiftly executing the decisions it sets. (25%)

  • Oversees enterprise data-retention schedules and end-to-end data-lifecycle management, including defensible deletion (20%)

  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders—Legal, Security, Data, Product, and business leaders—to embed and monitor data-governance policies, cultivate trust-based relationships, and diplomatically navigate competing priorities to build consensus, escalate non-compliance, and drive enterprise-wide adoption. (25%)

  • Ensures compliance with relevant federal and state privacy / retention regulations (CCPA, HIPAA, GLBA, etc.); leads periodic risk assessments and remediation (10%)

  • Manages the Atlan data catalog (metadata curation, glossary, lineage) to enable trusted data discovery and self-service analytics. (15%)

  • Delivers governance training and communications (5%)

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree Required. Master's Degree Preferred.

  • Certificate(s) or License(s): CDMP, CIPP/US or CIPM, PMP or PRINCE2, or comparable credentials

  • Years of experience: 5–7 years in data governance, data management, and compliance; 3+ years in a leadership role

  • Additional: Hands-on experience with Atlan (or similar catalog), strong knowledge of CCPA, and practical familiarity with HIPAA, GLBA, SOX, and NIST/ISO 27001 frameworks

SPECIALIZED TRAINING/KNOWLEDGE

  • Expert understanding of data-governance frameworks, metadata management, and stewardship programs

  • Strong leadership and stakeholder-management skills; proven ability to influence cross-functional teams

  • Knowledge of U.S. data-privacy and retention regulations and associated compliance controls

  • Proficiency with Atlan (or comparable metadata/catalog platforms), SQL, and data-quality tools

  • Excellent verbal/written communication for policy authoring, executive reporting, and training delivery

  • Analytical problem-solving, program-management, and change-management capabilities

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • 10% travel possible for conferences and in-person team meetings

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position primarily requires extended periods of computer work and videoconferencing, adequate home-office ergonomics, and the ability to lift or move up to 10 lbs. of equipment on occasion.

The starting rate is $120,000 to $140,000 annual. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
