About the Department

NSF’s ChemMatCARS, affiliated with the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME), the University of Chicago and funded by NSF, is a national user facility for frontier research in chemistry and materials science using synchrotron x-rays. It is located at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory. The mission of ChemMatCARS is to develop and operate world-class synchrotron x-ray facilities in the areas of small-molecule crystallography, liquid interface scattering, and anomalous small and wide-angle scattering to serve the needs of ChemMatCARS users.


Job Summary

The Pritzker School of Molecular is seeking a Research Professional to work as a beamline scientist in liquid interface scattering at Sector 15 (NSF’s ChemMatCARS) of Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. The successful candidate will work with a small group of scientists who specialize in the application of x-ray scattering and spectroscopy to liquid interfaces within a wide range of scientific problems in chemistry, biology, and chemical engineering. Additional responsibilities include the development and maintenance of X-ray scattering instrumentation as well as participation in the development and maintenance of the beamline optics and control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates and promotes advanced technical/scientific research projects, including data analysis. Recognizes the need for innovation and develops or incorporates advances in research concepts to help disseminate the results of research projects. Provides day-to-day operational oversight in support of the same.
  • Assists in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports. May help prepare presentations for scientific meetings and provides help with the preparation of grant applications and scientific manuscripts.
  • Works closely with ChemMatCARS lead scientists to write documentation and disseminate experimental methods and resources that support or advance user research.
  • Maintains group scientific operations, including activities of students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with other researchers in the group and joint research efforts.
  • Creates and presents tutorials, hands-on workshops, and documentation to educate the research community, as per the direction of the ChemMatCARS lead scientists.
  • Accurately and in a timely manner, maintains appointments, calendars, inventories, websites, grant-related documentation, financial projections (on grant, gift, and other funding sources), reports, and other information.
  • Reviews laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage complex data sets for research.
  • Trains new laboratory personnel.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Doctoral degree in experimental physical or biological sciences, chemical engineering, or a related area.

Experience:

  • Significant work experience; postdoc experience.
  • Expertise in synchrotron x-ray techniques for studying liquid-vapor interfaces or small-molecule sing-crystallography.
  • Background working within academic and laboratory environments.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Strong computer programming and instrumentation interface skills in Python and C programming languages.
  • Knowledge of Linux-based operating systems is highly desirable.
  • Strong computer skills including calendaring, document management, such as Dropbox, Box, etc., word processing, database management, and spreadsheet skills.
  • Knowledge of statistical/analytical software.
  • Familiarity with grant writing/submission and manuscript drafting, editing and review.
