How You’ll Make an Impact
We’re seeking an as-needed Environmental Data Analyst to support urban forestry and environmental data science projects. This flexible position will average 10–25 hours per week, beginning in June 2025 and continuing for at least three months, with the potential for extension or possible transition to full-time, based on mutual agreement.

You will report to the lead data scientist on the Urban Forestry team who manages technical analyses for urban forest planning and supports data needs across multiple practice areas. This role offers an exciting opportunity to strengthen your technical skillset, gain hands-on experience in applied environmental data science, and contribute to projects that support data-driven planning and the sustainable management of natural resources.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform spatial and statistical analysis to support canopy cover assessments using land cover classification, lidar, and other environmental datasets.
  • Create and maintain existing reproducible workflows using R and Python to process geospatial and tabular data.
  • Use tools such as RStudio, Jupyter Notebook, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Excel, and GitHub to manage and execute data analysis workflows.
  • Analyze and visualize datasets such as tree inventories, species water use ratings, land cover classifications, and municipal budgets.
  • Apply statistical techniques and data modeling methods to explore trends in canopy cover, species diversity, and planting potential.
  • Develop static and interactive visualizations, dashboards, and other graphics for project reports and presentations.
  • Support technical writing for Urban Forest Management Plans, including methodology summaries, metric interpretation, and visual data storytelling.
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical documentation, and scalable workflows for long-term data analysis.
  • Provide input on data analysis approaches, tools, protocols, and emerging technologies based on experience and industry knowledge.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Science, Data Science, Geography, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Interest in urban forestry and environmental science challenges.
  • Comfortable taking direction and providing regular updates to technical leads in a fast-paced, project-based environment.
  • Proficiency in R for data cleaning, scripting, analysis, and visualization, and geospatial workflows.
  • Familiarity with Python for geospatial and data analysis tasks.
  • Experience conducting geospatial analysis using QGIS or ArcGIS Pro.
  • Experience applying descriptive, inferential, and spatial statistics to environmental or geospatial datasets, including trend analysis, correlation, regression, and spatial pattern detection.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office environment, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for data formatting, report writing and presentations.
  • Experience creating maps, plots, and graphs that effectively communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with Git and GitHub for version control and code collaboration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on remote teams.
  • A valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree or higher in Environmental Data Science, Data Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting original research or developing new analytical methodologies.
  • Familiarity with tools like Google Earth Engine (GEE) and working with APIs.
  • Experience with SQL for database management, querying, and integration with data analysis workflows.
  • Experience using Power BI to create interactive dashboards or data reports.
  • Foundational knowledge of urban forestry concepts, including sustainability principles, climate impacts, tree maintenance practices, and standards such as ISA and ANSI.
  • Ability to contribute to team strategy, business development, and continuous improvement of data workflows.
Compensation: $30 - $45 hourly*
*Final agreed-upon compensation will be based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s related experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location. Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check prior to beginning employment.
