Job Description:
Boston Globe Media is embarking on a two-year AI innovation initiative as part of the Lenfest Institute for Journalism's AI Collaborative and Fellowship Program (in partnership with OpenAI and Microsoft). This initiative aims to enhance audience engagement, increase revenue, and personalize content using AI technologies. We are seeking an experienced AI Engineer Fellow to join our team on this two-year innovation journey. Reporting to the CTO, you’ll work with our product, engineering, newsroom, and business departments to prototype and experiment with AI tools and technologies. You’ll experiment, test, and implement cutting-edge AI solutions that help redefine how we drive reader engagement and optimize our internal workflows.
Responsibilities:
- Research and prototype AI-driven tools and systems for media production, content tagging, recommendations, personalization, and audience engagement.
- Collaborate with editorial, product, and business teams to identify opportunities for AI integration.
- Build proof-of-concept models and evaluate performance using real-world media use cases.
- Stay current with the latest advancements in AI/ML, especially in generative AI, NLP, computer vision, and multimodal models.
- Participate in weekly conversations with other members of the Lenfest grant cohort, sharing learnings, challenges and leveraging the group to work through challenges
- Present findings, demos, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Help build internal tools or APIs to support experiments with AI across the organization.
- Integrate AI tools with existing proprietary technologies and 3rd party applications.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in machine learning, deep learning, or AI engineering roles.
- Proficiency in NodeJS, Python and ML libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, scikit-learn).
- Experience with large language models, transformers, or generative AI tools (e.g., GPT, Claude, DALL·E, etc.).
- Ability to work independently on open-ended problems and rapidly prototype solutions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical ideas to diverse teams and bring stakeholders along on projects.
- The ability to travel for a few Lenfest cohort meetings in other cities throughout the year.
- Knowledge of WordPress, ArcXP, Snowflake, and Ad technologies is a plus.
- Bonus: Proven track record of building and deploying AI prototypes
- A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
