Machine Learning Engineer (Creative AI Product Lab)

We are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join the Creative AI Product Lab at Smartly! Our team works on helping marketers make the most of their ad creatives (images, video, text). We build and experiment with AI-based solutions across the creative workflow, from creative learning to creative production assistance and optimization. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of and work on high impact projects.

Our team members are based out of Helsinki and the San Francisco Bay Area. We are hiring for this position in Helsinki to be closer to DS/MLEs on our team, as well as, the rest of Smartly.io’s product development org. The Media AI Product Lab team, our sibling team under the AI Product Lab banner, is also based out of Helsinki/Berlin. Our team works with teams in Helsinki/Berlin often and we’ve been able to effectively collaborate, despite the time zone difference.

As a Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll:

• Build, experiment with, and productionize a variety of AI models/capabilities, primarily in the computer vision, generative AI (including AI agents), and natural language space.
• Train, finetune, and/or add pre-/post-processing to existing model architectures.
• Be given ownership and freedom to make decisions on model selection and model architecture, by evaluating both open/closed source solutions.
• Work with large scale and proprietary advertising data (across images, videos, text, audio, KPIs, etc).
• Be an integral part of devising Smartly’s AI vision, strategy, and model design.
• Be a core contributor of our Creative AI Product Lab Team and our ways of working to build high impact products. You’ll actively be involved in work planning, retrospectives, and overall team improvement.
• Work with our stakeholders - be them product, software engineers, data scientists - to ensure we meet customers where they are. As with most AI-related roles, being able to translate business/product needs to viable solutions is a must.
• Apply and enhance your soft skills through working closely with your colleagues and our customers. Hopping on customer calls, doing knowledge shares, mentoring junior engineers, running productive meetings, and pair programming/debugging are just some ways we grow our soft skills.
• Keep up to date with the latest AI innovations in academia, especially in areas such as computer vision, natural language processing, generative AI, and explainability.

What we are looking for:

• Experience building and testing production-quality computer vision, generative AI, and natural language-based AI capabilities for industry applications
• Experience designing, building, and experimenting with agentic systems.
• Experience working with MLOps workflows.
• Passion for solving customers problems at a fast pace
• Passion to drive best possible technical architecture choices, and be fearless when facing unknown new challenges.
• Willingness to work in a hybrid setup (3 days per week in our Helsinki office) as part of a globally distributed team.
