About the company

QED (https://qed.ai) is a tech company focused on public health and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. We build the digital infrastructure and AI used at the intersection of aid and scientific inquiry, including surveillance of HIV and malaria, and nutrient analysis of crops and soils, working at national-scale in several African countries. Our funding comes from multiple philanthropic and governmental organizations, including the Global Fund, Gates Foundation, CDC, and USAID.

We are looking for a mid/senior  ML engineer to join our team in Warsaw.

Requirements

Experience

  • 1+ years of Professional or equivalent academic experience in machine learning, preferably in computer vision

  • bachelor’s degree or higher  in Computer Science / Math / Physics / Machine learning

Technical skills

Required

  • strong fluency in python or other programming language

  • solid computer science fundamentals:

    • designing clean code

    • algorithms and data structures

    • programming language paradigms (OOP, functional programming)

  • git or other version control tool

  • ML tools: pytorch, numpy, pandas, matplotlib, opencv, scikitlearn or equivalents

  • SQL

  • knowledge of linux environment / doing things from the command line

Nice to have

  • experience with computer hardware, electronics, or physics

  • experience with unifying diverse datasets

  • basic knowledge of cloud computing and data processing pipelines

  • experience with research & development projects

Mental capacity

Required

  • fluency in statistics and probability. 

  • non-superficial intuitions about AI, beyond import blackbox

  • well-versed with the latest trends with top-performing tools and the ML research community

  • strong skills in logical reasoning and critical thinking

  • confidence to receive constructive feedback through regular code review

  • working proficiency (≥C1) in speaking, reading, and typing English (≥45 words per minute)

Nice to have

  • STEM PhD

  • interesting personal projects

  • notable research achievements

  • track record in programming, data modeling and/or math competitions

Soft skills

  • willingness and interest in working with people from other cultures

  • empathy and social intelligence

  • you have to care about the work that you do

  • you have to be optimistic at least sometimes, although pessimism tends to be useful

Nice to have

  • interest in the sustainable development goals, particularly in public health, agriculture, and assisting developing countries

  • willingness to go on an adventure

Work practices

Requires at least a 4/5 commitment physically based in Warsaw, Poland, with a hybrid of remote and in-person work. We expect at least 2-3 days per week in the office. The working hours are flexible, for example you do not need approval to take out a small chunk in the middle of the day to handle some personal business.
