A Glimpse of the Job
This role develops, leads and conducts research in Operational Data Science and related areas. Develop research collaborations and proposals. Direct and coordinate work of students and involved researchers; develop and deliver training related to research. Conduct original research in Data Science (taken to include Machine Learning and Artificial intelligence) and its applications. Direct TAMIDS Operational Data Science Lab and work with TAMIDS Thematic Labs directors to develop joint initiative in research and training. Serve as a point of contact and local expert concerning these operational data for Texas A&M faculty, researchers, and students. Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Research-Conducts original research in Data Science (taken to include Machine Learning and Artificial intelligence) and its applications. Develops or extends Data Science methods to increase performance and scope of applications. Applies Data Science methods to enable new applications.
  • Leverages statistical programming languages and packages for knowledge discovery and data analysis, (e.g., R, Python, XGBoost, Spark, Yolo). Collects, assures, curates, and stores data. Performs integrative analysis of data from multiple sources. Develops software and visualization tools that embody analysis results for use by partners and general users. Works with internal and external partners in universities, agencies and elsewhere to acquire research data sources, overseeing specifics of data storage, management, access, and usage agreements.
  • Project Development and Management- Directs TAMIDS Operational Data Science Lab and works with TAMIDS Thematic Labs directors to develop joint initiative in research and training. Leads engagement with TAMIDS partner and external organizations to develop new Data Science research collaborations, including formulating novel analyses and use cases for operational data. Identifies sources of funding for external research proposals and develops research proposals for external funding both within TAMIDS and in collaboration with partners. Acts independently as project owner with responsibility for sustaining project operations. Directs the work of students and coordinates role of TAMIDS postdocs attached to the projects.
  • Communications, Training, & Mentorship- Serves as a point of contact and local expert concerning these operational data for Texas A&M faculty, researchers, and students. Identifies project personnel for students engaged in projects, and acts as lead TAMIDS technical mentor. Designs and delivers occasional training workshops on data and tools. Collaborate on preparing technical presentations and conference papers on the work.

Required Education:

  • Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Architecture Engineering, or related field.

Minimum Experience:

  • Three (3) years of experience in a data scientist position in an academic, industrial or government setting. Must include at least one (1) year of experience with: A/B testing including test design, sampling, hypothesis testing, evaluation and measurement; Big Data tools including Cloud, Hadoop, Pig, Hive and Spark; GIS tools and systems; querying data from relational databases using SQL; R or Python; experience developing courses or professional education in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and their applications; developing collaborations with researchers across organizations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
