As an Applied Scientist II working in the OneNote team, your core mission is to deliver high quality AI-scenarios for Copilot Notebooks. You’ll be responsible for measuring the impact of models and working with other Applied Scientists to design AI-powered experiences. We are looking for candidates who are creative, self-motivated, & have a learn-it-all mindset.

Responsibilities
- Generate synthetic datasets for high quality data curation used in model evaluation and/or fine tuning.
- Implement the evaluation techniques and metrics to measure the impact of the latest models on product scenarios.
- Collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to ship scenarios powered by AI.
- Stay current with the latest advancements and bring ideas to the product teams.
- Foster a healthy and inclusive team environment, provide technical guidance via knowledge sharing sessions.
- Apply strategies provided by senior team members and incorporate state-of-the-art research. You’ll also develop an understanding of methods used in the community and gain expertise in a deeply specialized area.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research)
- OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year(s) of experience in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and/or statistics.
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with coding in multiple languages.
Other Requirements:
Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience in end-to-end development for building, shipping, and iterating on high-impact ML models.
- Expertise in implementing, training, and debugging transformer-based ML models and other related tools and technologies for building and shipping large language models (LLM) applications.
- Effective communication skills, maintaining customer experience and quality along with the ability to work across groups and disciplines.
- Ability to quickly ramp up on various domains within Machine Learning.
- 1+ year(s) experience creating publications (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers).
Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
