WHO YOU ARE
You are a self-motivated business intelligence specialist who is equally adept at communicating with computers as you are at communicating with people. You might be great at data integrations, data warehousing, data visualization, or data management, but your hidden talent is championing the user’s voice and explaining technology in simple terms.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
The main objective of this role is to guide and enable our clients’ data ecosystem towards providing consistent access to the right information at the right time. At Grantbook, you’ll be part of the Delivery team providing consulting services across a portfolio of our grantmaker clients. On each project you will work closely in cross-functional teams of two to four, taking ownership over the technical details and the implementation of the data ecosystem and/or business intelligence scope.
Business Intelligence Specialist: is an expert at translating client needs and data into meaningful information products. You expertly gather reporting requirements, create effective data pipelines and models, build complex philanthropy-specific dashboards and guide the development of data-driven client culture. Expected Outcomes are primarily driven in the areas around Data Visualization and Data Operations.
YOUR PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Requirements Gathering
- Probe Strategic Needs: Run workshops and exercises to help identify and prioritize strategic cross-functional reporting needs that can be met with analytics solutions.
- System Selection: Undertake current-state audits that gather and document client functional requirements and carry out BI system research to evaluate new BI solutions.
- Requirements Gathering: Leading discovery meetings to map out specific business reporting needs with client users, and translate them into report / dashboard requirements.
Business Intelligence System Configuration
- Data Modelling: Define metrics and structure data tables to support effective report building that meet end user client reporting needs.
- Dashboard Building: Design and configure data visualizations, interactive dashboards and static reports using Business Intelligence tools that help users quickly and easily gain insights from their data and answer questions relevant to their role.
- Continuous improvement: Monitor tool and platform changes, and proactively suggest and build enhancements to existing dashboards.
Strategy and User Adoption
- User Training: Produce and share client-specific training and documentation, including on-site training, video tutorials, and blog posts.
- Drive Adoption: Monitor user adoption of BI systems and individual reports, suggest opportunities for clients to build their data culture and literacy.
- Strategic Support: Provide clients with advice on implementing data standards, data taxonomies, data governance and data management practices that lead to effective reporting.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Occasional travel to client sites across North America as required.
- Support development and ongoing enhancement of Grantbook’s internal data warehousing architecture and Business Intelligence needs.
- Support Grantbook’s marketing & sales efforts through sharing of your expertise.
- Participate in our culture of learning and striving for excellence by contributing to service innovation and development, and proactively sharing your knowledge with the rest of our team.
- Log your working time in Grantbook’s time tracking system as billable hours are the basis for revenue as Grantbook is a consultancy.

WHAT YOU CAN OFFER - Experience & Skills
Business Intelligence Specialist:
- Three years minimum using Business Intelligence solutions to develop interactive dashboards, data visualizations and static reports to meet complex business needs.
- Strong proficiency in Qlik Sense (or QlikView), with experience in at least 1 other Business Intelligence or data visualization tool preferable (e.g. PowerBI, Looker (Google Data) Studio or Tableau).
- Two years minimum working directly with business users to understand their needs and translate them into clear reporting requirements.
- Experience accessing data from different systems, building automated data pipelines and modeling data to support effective reporting.
- Strong proficiency with SQL and familiarity with cloud-based data manipulation and warehousing tools (e.g. BigQuery, Snowflake, Google Cloud tools, Data Form, FiveTran, Azure Data Factory).
- Experience supporting strategic approaches to Business Intelligence and Reporting, for example advising on data collection strategies, supporting tool selections etc.
- Significant experience with data manipulation in Excel / Google sheets and experience with programming languages such as Python, R and Ruby, a bonus.
Independent of role:
- Strong interest in developing an expertise in understanding and modeling data from grants management systems, such as Fluxx, GivingData, SurveyMonkey Apply, Salesforce, and SmartSimple.
- Experience engaging in data integrations using ETL tools, particularly for Salesforce, is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic hybrid/remote environment. You’ve developed strategies to manage the continual intake of requests for your attention, self-organize to prioritize your tasks to meet tight deadlines across multiple projects, and communicate proactively your progress with team members. You are a keen independent problem-solver, but also know when it’s appropriate to seek help to deliver efficiently.
- Previous work experience with the Not-For-Profit sector (bonus points for any previous experience working with grantmakers), consulting, or technology services is considered a strong asset.
- High proficiency in the use of cloud solutions, such as G Suite, Office 365, Salesforce, Box, Dropbox, and Asana is expected.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including ability to translate technical information into plain English and presentation skills.
- Proven interpersonal skills and a customer service oriented approach.
- Eligibility to work in Canada, and ideally to travel to and work in client offices across North America.
SALARY & BENEFITS
Grantbook has a transparent salary structure with 6 levels, from A through F. We are looking for skilled and experienced candidates at the levels B and C. A skilled specialist earlier in their career (<2 years direct & relevant experience) would be placed at Level B and their starting salary would be within the range of $68,370 - $78,000. A more experienced, mid-level candidate would start at Level C within the salary range of $78,000 - $93,000.
Throughout your interview process, we’ll learn more about your skills and experience and determine your starting salary based on what you bring to the team.
In addition, Grantbook boasts an Employee Ownership Trust which allows team members to participate in profit sharing (after the probation period).
We take pay equity at Grantbook very seriously and strive to ensure everyone on our team is accurately and fairly compensated for their work. This means someone who is less comfortable negotiating a higher salary won’t be financially penalized compared to someone who readily argues for higher pay. Our salary bands are tied to similar roles in the market. We scan similar organizations—size, sector, culture— with the goal to provide competitive compensation. Each level reflects a stage of progress at Grantbook defined by expected experience and skills for that level.

WHERE WE WORK
We are a mostly remote-first team, with a fantastic office for collaborating (and having pizza lunches) centrally located by the Sherbourne subway station in Toronto. The majority of our staff is located in and around Toronto and have the option to work hybrid. We have team members across Canada, with several clustered in Vancouver and Calgary.
