The Health Informatics Institute (HII) at the University of South Florida is seeking to fill a non-tenure earning position as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank, dependent upon qualifications. The Institute is NIH funded as a data coordinating center for several large clinical networks and actively participates in the design and conduct of epidemiological studies and clinical trials.
This position will conduct collaborative research and provide active support for ongoing Institute activities, especially the TrialNet type 1 diabetes study. Opportunities exist for collaborations in other NIH funded and privately funded type 1 diabetes research and disease prevention projects. The Institute is seeking candidates with expertise in clinical trials; however expertise/experience with longitudinal and high dimensional data are sought after as well. Opportunities exist for teaching and graduate student mentoring, if desired.
The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and salary will be based upon the University of South Florida pay scale. Individuals with 5 or more years of experience are preferred. The incumbent has potential to take a leadership role in the Institute and become the Principal Investigator of one or more studies.

The HII is comprised of a diverse team of 30 faculty and more than 120 staff with expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, health informatics, computer science, genetics, nutrition, psychology, pediatrics, public health, clinical trials, and health services research. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, industry, and other sources, the Institute provides the technical means to facilitate interaction and contributions in knowledge among physicians and patients throughout the U.S. and international communities. - Use bioinformatics and machine learning tools to analyze high-throughput omic data, including WGS, GWAS, DNA methylation, RNA-seq, lipidomics, gut microbiome data, etc.
- Perform analyses to examine how multiomic markers are associated with Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
- Develop and implement methods for integrative analysis of available multiomic data, including genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, lipidomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data. Prepare manuscripts, grant proposals, and scientific meetings presentations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics/Statistics, Statistical Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, or a related discipline, and have demonstrated productivity and leadership in their chosen field, and should complement existing strengths in the Institute, which include epidemiology, biostatistics, statistical genetics, and bioinformatics.
- The successful candidate will have also demonstrated excellence and creativity in research.
- Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor.
- For Assistant/Associate Professor - Normally will have produced creative work, professional writing or research in refereed and other professional journals and be a recognized authority in the field of specialization.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of programming proficiency in R or Python and shell scripting on UNIX/Linux environments, particularly with large data files in various formats.
- Experience in analysis of human sequence data using bioinformatics tools (e.g., trimmomatic, bowtie, SAMtools, GATK, Picard, HOMER) and genetic databases (Ensembl Genes, 1000 Genomes, ESP, HapMap).
- Working knowledge of statistical genetics will be a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
