Your Impact

You will contribute to Axon’s product line as part of the Axon Robotics / Sky-Hero by Axon team (https://www.axon.com/products/axon-sky-hero). We are building career-defining, next-generation Drones and Robots to help reach our Moonshot: cut gun-related deaths between police and the public by 50% in 10 years.

Our products are used by tactical teams worldwide in the most challenging conditions, and as a Sr. Embedded Software Engineer, Robotics, you’ll contribute to advance Axon’s mission to Protect Life, by building advanced, Mission-Critical Embedded Robotics Software running on powerful, albeit resource-constrained Linux Systems.

We don’t rely on off-the-shelf platforms or electronics. We choose the best of technology and build innovative products that include tailored software, hardware, sensors and electronics.

You’ll solve difficult challenging problems in Computer Vision, using your knowledge to architect, implement and improve algorithms and models for advanced perception in the fields of VIO and SLAM.

What You’ll Do

Location: Brussels, Belgium
Reports to: Director of Engineering

  • Prototyping and research of sensor fusion algorithms in the context of Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) in coordination with other autonomy specialists, embedded software engineering and computer vision engineering teams
  • Taking part in the research, selection and validation of sensing components.
  • Extensive experience with perception sensors selection (cameras, LIDAR, ToF, etc.)
  • Implementing the selected algorithms on-device and validating performance, including real-time aspects
  • Prototyping inventive new representations of on-device mapping to support and expand the situational awareness of UAV operators
  • Leading the design and development of testing and simulation to ensure the quality of deliverables matches the demanding situations and environments Axon Robotics products are expected to operate in
  • Work with internationally distributed teams (Imaging, AI, Software, etc.) and take part in business travels to our different offices around the world.

What You Bring

  • Degree in Robotics, Control systems, Computer Vision or a related engineering discipline with at least 8 years of experience in the research and development of localization and mapping functionality in robotics systems (PhD preferred).
  • Extensive experience with perception sensors selection (cameras, LIDAR, ToF, etc.)
  • Demonstrated track record of bringing VIO/SLAM systems on the market.
  • Extensive academic or industrial experience in research and development of state-of-the-art VIO and SLAM implementations, ideally both in prototyping and on-device implementation.
  • Deep understanding of the challenges of localization in GPS-denied indoors environments.
  • Good knowledge of at least one prototyping language (such as Python) and one implementation language (C++, Rust, etc.)
  • English proficiency required, French and or Dutch are a plus

Any experience with the following is a plus:

  • One or more robotics control or motion planning areas, including (but not limited to) the following:
    • Path planning
    • Trajectory optimization
    • Obstacle avoidance
  • Sensing and mapping in low-visibility environments
  • Collaborative mapping with drone swarms
  • Deep Learning, particularly in the contexts of Computer Vision, Dynamics or Controls
  • PX4, ROS (particularly ROS 2)
