Job Description

The Data Management Specialist plays a critical role in the University's Institutional Research and Effectiveness department by managing data systems, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision making across campus. This position is essential for maintaining institutional data integrity and providing timely, accurate information to university leadership and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate for this role will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and excellent communication and collaboration abilities. Candidate should also have proficiency in data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.

Job Description:

The Data Management Specialist is responsible for using a wide variety of information, knowledge, and tools to develop, modify, and administer databases used to store and retrieve data. This work involves executing complex queries, modifying data elements, retrieval and reporting of information from databases, and ensuring data security. This role will provide leadership to the University through the following specific job duties:

 Data Management and System Administration:

  • Manage daily data warehouse operations, including interfaces with Blackboard, Helio Campus, BLUE, and other campus systems
  • Execute KBOR data loads (AY Data, Fall Census, 20th day and Final loads for course and student history)
  • Manage data integrations from ERP and other source systems
  • Establish and maintain access controls for all applications and databases managed by DAA
  • Implement comprehensive data quality management processes to identify and resolve data integrity issues

 Reporting and Analysis:

  • Assist in producing reports for university leadership and the Kansas Board of Regents, including KSPSD, State Division of Budget position files, Program Review Data, and Departmental Review Data
  • Modify and maintain web reports as needed
  • Perform on-demand data extraction and integration to facilitate easier access and reporting

 Collaboration and Support:

  • Work collaboratively with DAA staff and campus stakeholders to support data needs and planning
  • Work closely with the Director of Data and Analytics to maximize effectiveness and efficiency in utilization of university information
  • Provide technical guidance to the Director regarding data management best practices
  • Help establish and implement data governance procedures ensuring compliance with privacy laws and regulations regarding information and the privacy of that information

 Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field and demonstrated experience with database management and data systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) or related field
  • Two (2) years of related experience in technology, information management, relational database management, data mining or statistics, including programming, managing and maintaining data systems
  • Two (2) years experience in a variety of data management software (e.g., Excel, SQL, Python, R, SAS, DB2)
  • Experience working with large datasets ("big data") to identify patterns, trends, and associations relating to higher education KPIs
  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations and compliance requirements in educational settings
