Join DTU’s Python Installation Support team! Help fellow students get set up, fix issues, and share tips. Flexible hours, great experience, and a chance to shape how Python is used at DTU.

Background
As of 2023, DTU has revised its “polyteknisk grundlag” curriculum to emphasise computational thinking across foundational subjects such as Mathematics, Programming, and Physics. Python has been selected as the standard programming language in these courses, and all new students are expected to have a functional Python environment on their personal laptops.

To support this initiative, DTU Computing Center has established a Python Support Unit to assist students and ensure a smooth onboarding experience. This unit will be central to setting standards and best practices for Python use at DTU.

Role and Responsibilities
As a Python Installation Support Assistant, you will work with fellow students to:

  • Assist with the installation of Python and required packages on student laptops.
  • Troubleshoot installation issues across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.
  • Support pip and conda usage and general package management.
  • Guide students in setting up and using virtual environments (venv or conda).
  • Create and maintain user-friendly installation guides using Markdown or reStructuredText, formatted with Sphinx.
  • Stay updated on Python best practices and relevant PEPs.
  • Contribute to dialogues on the future direction of Python support at DTU.

The job and expectations
We are looking for students who have:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Solid understanding of Python and its installation process.
  • The ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with peers.
  • Experience with pip, virtual environments, and conda.
  • Basic knowledge of Markdown, reStructuredText, and the Sphinx documentation tool (not required).
  • Availability to be physically present 6-10 hours per week during the semester at the DTU Lyngby Campus.

Working Conditions

  • The role is approx. 9 - 10 hours per week (e.g., on campus and at home).
  • Hours can be adjusted to suit your academic schedule.
  • Workload will be higher at the start of the semester and decrease gradually.

Salary and appointment terms
Salary and employment terms in accordance with the OAO-S Joint Agreement and the organization agreement for IT employees (Prosa) in the service of the state.

You will be part of a team of student assistants reporting to the DTU Computing Center. Regular meetings will be held to share experiences and improve support practices.
