Job Description
Nordstrom’s People Analytics team focuses on using organizational research, data science, and data analysis techniques to uncover employee and organizational insights that contribute to Nordstrom’s long-term success. The ideal candidate for the Data Scientist role is a talented internal researcher who is passionate about using data and organizational theories to partner with and support HR, business, and people leaders to make informed decisions. In this role, the individual will be expected to be hands-on with data while also able to communicate results effectively to build trust and drive business value.
As an integral part of our People Analytics team, the primary responsibility of the Data Scientist 1 role is to utilize data science and analytics to deliver actionable results to support our Human Resources platforms and programs. You will assist in creating, measuring, and maintaining KPIs for our 15,000 salespeople, provide advanced insights from company-wide surveys, and perform ad-hoc analyses for all touchpoints throughout the employee lifecycle.
A day in the life…
- Promote a data-driven culture by educating cross-functional HR partners and business leaders on the value and effective usage of people analytics.
- Conduct in-depth analyses using statistical methods, regressions/ML models, and other analytical techniques to uncover insights related to talent, engagement, KPI drivers, turnover, and productivity.
- Support salespeople across Nordstrom stores by analyzing engagement and employee experience trends, identifying characteristics of high-performing individuals and successful departments, and maintaining salesperson scorecard KPIs and goals to drive performance and employee growth.
- Design and manage interactive dashboards to encourage data-driven decision making and stakeholder self-service.
- Work with peers and stakeholders to analyze employee survey results and uncover valuable insights using various analytical methods.
- Develop and refine metrics tailored to unique sections of the employee lifecycle, including onboarding, internal career growth and mobility, development milestones, and turnover.
- Manage time effectively to tackle ad-hoc requests while maintaining larger projects and exploratory efforts.
- Identify new opportunities with pragmatic research, data science, and advanced analytics to translate into actionable recommendations that inform strategic business decisions.
You own this if you have…
- Master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology, organizational behavior, social psychology, computer science, data science, data analytics, mathematics, statistics, or closely related field.
- 3+ years of corporate experience in data science and analytics using SQL in a variety of RDMS environment.
- Direct experience in human resources (HR)/people data analytics, employee surveys, and qualitative data analysis.
- Ability to apply quantitative analysis to HR data and synthesize it into compelling narratives to influence leadership decision-making
- Strong data visualization skills with ability to build and maintain insightful dashboards.
- Experience with R and SQL for querying, data manipulation, and analyses.
- Experience gathering data from multiple sources (writing SQL queries, creating/editing/automating Workday reports, etc.) to triangulate for research and analysis with minimal support.
- Experience in statistical analysis methodologies such as decision trees, neural networks, LLMs, clustering, factor analysis, regressions, forecasting, survival analysis, etc.
- Strong consulting skills with experience in stakeholder management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
