JOB PURPOSE
The Personal Care business in Unilever is committed to making a real difference to the lives of our consumers through brands such as Dove, Axe and Rexona. The Science and Technology (S&T) group within Personal Care R&D is focussed on developing disruptive technologies, underpinned by strong scientific expertise to create products that delight our consumers whilst being good for the planet.
We currently have an opportunity for an Automated Formulation and Measurement Scientist in our Physical Sciences (Data, Automation and Modelling) Group in S&T. This role will be based between the Materials Innovation Factory in Liverpool (MIF) and our Port Sunlight R&D site. The role will deliver across the deodorants, skin cleansing and oral care programmes and will focus on the development of winning products using automated formulation and characterisation techniques. The successful candidate will make use of the automated workflows currently available at the MIF and will contribute to the development of new methods and validation of new laboratory automation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with UK & Global teams to define and execute automated formulation & measurement projects which deliver into Unilever’s Personal Care business.
- Translate project goals into actionable experiments on the automation, advanced measurement, and robotics in the Materials Innovation Factory at the University of Liverpool and the Product Innovation Laboratory in Port Sunlight.
- Ensure Personal Care’s automated experimental data is captured, processed and stored in alignment with the FAIR principles of scientific data capture.
- Carrying out experiments on complex instruments using the latest digital data capture tools, working within a dynamic team of Unilever, University and third-party scientists.
- Analyse and interpret the data to deliver recommendations to our global project teams.
- Work with a skilled team of scientists to validate & develop the newest generation of laboratory automation.
ALL ABOUT YOU
- Essential: MSc/MEng in Chemistry / Chemical Engineering (or related subject) or BSc/BEng with relevant experience in laboratory automation/High Throughput Experimentation.
- Essential: Ability to work safely in a laboratory and with machinery, experienced in creating Risk Assessments and ensuring compliance with CoSHH.
- Essential: Evidence of stakeholder management and ensuring complex work is scheduled & completed on-time.
- Essential: Excellent communication (written and verbal), organisational, interpersonal and team working skills.
- Essential: A quick learner, not afraid to take the initiative and be proactive to get things done.
- Desirable: Data Science, Programming (Python, SQL) and Statistical Experiment Design skills.
- Desirable: Experience in operation and/or validation of Laboratory Automation equipment.
- Desirable: Experience in High Throughput Assay method development
- Desirable: An understanding of formulation and/or colloid science.
