Symptonic is a pioneering research-to-business (R2B) project at Aalto University that leverages cutting-edge machine learning and signal-processing techniques to develop voice-based biomarking platform for early detection and monitoring of health conditions. Our goal is to translate promising academic results into a clinically validated platform that can support diagnostics, patient monitoring, and personalized care.

School of Electrical Engineering’s Department of Information and Communications Engineering is now seeking a

Research Assistant or Project Worker

to help us bring these research results into clinical practice. Are you passionate about machine learning and signal processing and eager to apply them to real-world health challenges? In this role, you will develop the technical validation our R2B project needs to commercialize the system. If the project leads to commercialization, there may be longer-term opportunities to continue shaping the platform’s future.

Your role and goals

In this position, you will implement and evaluate state-of-the-art deep learning models for voice signal processing and deliver trained models along with quantitative performance metrics to demonstrate their effectiveness to clinical and industry partners. You will also conduct literature reviews, create technical illustrations, and prepare documentation tailored to various stakeholders, including medical experts, venture capitalists, patient groups, and funding agencies such as Business Finland.

The selected person will be either a student as a Research Assistant or in a case of a person who has already graduated, a Project Worker.

Work will be carried out mainly on site in Otaniemi, with the option of partial remote work Working hours can be adjusted to suit the applicant’s life situation, ranging from 50% to 100% of full‐time.  However, for students 50 % working time is maximum during school year.  The contract will be fixed term, with a duration of 6–12 months, depending on the agreed working hours.

Your network and team

You will join a dynamic team of three: Mikko Petäjä (Business Champion), Saska Tirronen (Technical Champion), and Farhad Javanmardi (Post-doctoral Researcher). The project’s Principal Investigator is Prof. Paavo Alku.

Your experience and ambitions

The ideal candidate has:

  • Good programming skills in Python

  • Good skills in PyTorch or TensorFlow

  • Working knowledge of Linux (experience from Aalto Triton or other high-performance computing is considered an advantage)

  • A solid understanding of deep learning architectures, such as RNNs, CNNs, Transformers, and generative frameworks (e.g., GANs, normalizing flows, diffusion models), and how to apply them in signal processing

  • Fluency in English; Finnish proficiency is considered an advantage
