Robotics Engineer
Hendrick Motorsports Technical Solutions, United States
Hendrick Motorsports
Hendrick Motorsports is a dynamic and growing force within the defense industry. We are seeking a Robotics Engineer to contribute to developing cutting-edge unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and next-generation electro-mechanical equipment. This role operates within a fast-paced, mission-critical environment, focusing on challenging and impactful projects that directly enhance national security. This engineer will be part of a collaborative team, working to redefine the future of defense robotics. This unique environment combines the agility and innovation typical of a startup with the stability, proven culture, and established resources of Hendrick Motorsports.
What You'll Do:
· Design & Development Support: Assist in the design, development, and integration of robust mechatronic systems for our UGV platforms and robotic prototypes.
· Software Development: Develop, implement, and optimize software solutions for robotic control, sensor integration, navigation, and autonomy, primarily utilizing ROS2, Python, and C++ (Arduino).
· Electrical Systems: Confidently perform electrical design and troubleshooting. Work hands-on with electrical components, including PCBA design and component sourcing, integrating various power supply systems (e.g., DC power systems, voltage steps, wire sizing, connectors), and creating reliable wiring harnesses. This also includes microcontroller integration.
· System Operations: Manage and maintain software repositories using Git, and operate within a Linux development environment.
· Field Support & Travel: Provide critical technical support and perform field repairs. Confidently diagnose issues in the field, clearly communicate information to end-users (non-experts), and determine solution paths. Represent Hendrick Motorsports at customer demos, industry trade shows, and technical meetings/calls. This role requires regular travel, including some weekend travel as needed, often involving travel with equipment for hardware demonstrations.
· Problem Solving & Refinement: Apply a thorough approach to identify and solve complex technical challenges, continuously seeking ways to refine and improve products beyond initial specifications.
· Collaboration & Communication: Serve as a trusted partner within multidisciplinary teams, effectively communicating technical information, and producing high-quality, professional written work.
· Entrepreneurial Mindset: Embrace an entrepreneurial environment, demonstrating adaptability, calmness under pressure, and a willingness to commit to long work weeks, when necessary, balanced with flexibility for downtime. Understands the intersection of business development and engineering.
Required Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field.
· 2-3 years of professional experience in robotics engineering, focusing on mechatronic hardware and software integration. Exceptional candidates with less experience will also be considered.
· Proficiency in ROS2, Python, and C++ (Arduino) for embedded systems and robotics applications.
· Demonstrates understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, including PCBA design (basics), component sourcing, microcontroller integration, power management (DC power systems, voltage steps, wire sizing, connectors), and creating harnesses.
· Proficiency in basic sensor integration.
· Proficiency in Git for version control and strong command of Linux operating systems.
· Valid drivers license required
· Confident and articulate communicator for internal discussions and external presentations.
· Excellent interpersonal skills for end-user interfacing; capable of building strong professional relationships.
· Very thorough in approach, consistently finding ways to refine products.
· Demonstrates exceptional calmness under pressure.
· Genuinely interested in learning and contributing to defense robotics. Consistently produces high-quality, professional written work.
· Ability to represent Hendrick Motorsports well in all interactions.
· Understanding of how startups/entrepreneurs operate, including dedication for long work weeks balanced with flexibility for downtime.
· Acts as a trusted partner to colleagues and stakeholders.
· This role subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements and as such, U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident or U.S. Person Status Required.
Bonus Skills & Knowledge:
· In-depth knowledge of CAN bus systems.
· Strong understanding of networking concepts in a robotics context, including IP layers.
· Experience or understanding of AI/machine learning applications in robotics.
· Prior experience in the defense industry or with military robotics.
· Proven track record in developing robotic systems in a high-reliability industry.
