Position Summary

The Health Data Science (HeDS) Platform at McGill University is seeking a Data Scientist to support research activities, data management, and training initiatives. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), research consultations, data management frameworks, and collaborative projects in genomics, health data science, and AI. This role also involves training and community-building initiatives, platform operations support, and engagement with McGill’s research community.

Primary Responsibilities

Research Support & Data Management

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for data handling, data analysis, and reproducibility in genomics research.
  • Provide consultation and support to researchers on data science methodologies, computational approaches, and AI applications.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and validation of data management frameworks for D2R-HeDS projects.
  • Work with research teams to develop and optimize bioinformatics and AI-driven pipelines for health and genomics applications.

Training & Community-Building Initiatives

  • Develop and deliver training materials, workshops, and tutorials on data science, genomics, AI, and best practices in research data management.
  • Organize and actively participate (leading discussions, presenting research findings) to seminars, forums, and hands-on sessions to build a community of practice in health data science.
  • Engage with stakeholders, researchers, and students to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange within the McGill research ecosystem.

Platform Activities & Technical Support

  • Support the implementation and maintenance of HeDS data management framework, including the metadata repository, data management plans, and data catalogue.
  • Assist in the evaluation and integration of AI models and computational pipelines for analyzing biological and clinical datasets.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to ensure secure and scalable computing infrastructure for data processing and storage.
  • Contribute to grant applications and funding proposals by providing technical expertise and research support.
  • Participate in the application of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles during research support, data management, platform activities and technical support.


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Master’s or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, or related languages for data analysis and machine learning.
  • Experience with genomics data analysis, health informatics, or computational biology.
  • Knowledge of machine learning, AI techniques, and statistical modeling applied to biological data.
  • Proficiency with high-performance computing (HPC), cloud computing, or workflow automation tools (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake).
  • Experience with data management principles, FAIR guidelines, and metadata standards.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex data science concepts to interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with training program development and knowledge translation in health data science.
  • Previous experience in collaborative research environments, open science, and data sharing initiatives.
