Senior System Architect

The Boeing Company is looking for a Senior System Architect to join the Boeing's Phantom Works Open C2 & Autonomy team located in Tukwila, WA. This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) business organization.

The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in leading and directing software engineering and system design teams, ensuring technical alignment and synergies across multiple programs.

Successful candidates:

  • Must have an active Top Secret clearance with special access program access, active COMSEC and NATO special categories are highly desired

  • Collaboration with and directing software engineering leads, test leads, and system design teams from multiple organizations on key decisions regarding functional allocations, software requirements development, software architecture, software development, and test strategies

  • Represent Mission Systems Open C2 & Autonomy to Boeing and external organizations, discussing capabilities and potential future capabilities with potential customers and partners, both domestic and foreign

  • Advise and direct Mission Systems Open C2 & Autonomy project leads to ensure technical alignment and synergy of all C2 & Autonomy projects with production programs, IR&D efforts and senior management directives

  • Advise Air Dominance and Phantom Works senior management on long-range technology development planning of systems architectures, development efforts, and implementation

  • Partner with proposal leads and provide subject matter expertise for the development of classified proposal activities supporting Phantom Works and BDS

  • Must have or be able to obtain program billets for support of proposal activities

  • Direct and consult critical programs within and adjacent to the Mission Systems Open C2 & Autonomy portfolio with expert knowledge of requirements, MBSE, networking, command and control message protocols, and flight test experience

  • These programs/efforts include but are not MUMT, uncrewed C2, TPSE II, E-7A, CTEN, MQ-25, MQ-28, CMCC, Aurora Flight Science x-planes, and COMC2

  • Experience in directing, planning and executing Multidomain live exercises, such as Emerald Flag, including clearance for flight tests on experimental aircraft. Must provide expert knowledge and demonstrate ability to lead the planning and execution of software development from desktop to laboratory to flight demonstration

  • Demonstrate leadership of software tool improvement, process improvement, and metrics improvement initiatives, specifically transitional software to DevSecOps in the Boeing Software Factory toolset, plan and estimate timeframes, work with program leadership on funding and allocation of engineering resources

  • Directs the implementation of Agile Software Development practices in the software development process, including introduction of process improvements based on Agile principles

  • Experience in directing, consulting and implementing crewed-uncrewed teaming and resilient communications architecture including network design, message design, requirements management, algorithm development, test and verification execution and documentation

  • Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally to support customer requirements and establish and maintain relationships

  • Travel often has short notice, and the duration is determined by activity completion

  • Provide subject matter expertise during requirements/design reviews for multiple programs and demonstrate expertise in issue identification and resolution during non-advocate review activities

  • Must demonstrate expertise in communication skills for all levels of engineering and management

  • Demonstrate the training and mentoring of junior engineers, through strong interpersonal and communication skills

Position Responsibilities

  • Directs the design, development, analyses, and maintenance of software systems to meet industry, customer and internal quality, safety, security and certification standards

  • Partners with appropriate stakeholders to inform system definition and advises on translation of system-level requirements into software requirements that meet customer, operational and performance requirements and have clear traceability to design, code and test artifacts

  • Directs software system-level analyses to identify risk, issues and opportunities; consults on integration and deployment of mitigation actions throughout the software lifecycle

  • Provides consultation on code reviews to ensure alignment to requirements and standards

  • Directs monitoring and reviewing test completion, verification processes and issue resolution for software systems

  • Advice on development of user documentation and training to educate end users about usage of software products

  • Directs review of product and process for alignment with project plans and industry standards by tracking and evaluating internal team and supplier performance

  • Directs the research and implementation of current and emerging technologies, tools, frameworks and changes in regulations relevant to software development

  • Provides technical leadership for software project management and software supplier management activities

  • Advises management on a wide range of topics related to the software systems engineering environment

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work on-site at one of the listed location options.

Security Clearance and Export Control Requirements:

This position requires an active Top Secret U.S. Security Clearance. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):

  • 28 years related relevant work experience as a Software Engineer

  • 28 years of experience in object-oriented programing languages and scripting languages (Java, C++, C#, Python)

  • 28 years of experience in RTOS, Windows and/or Linux

  • 28 years of experience in Jenkins, Perforce, Nexus, Boeing Software Factory Tooling, CI/CD Pipeline Management, Containerization, GCC, Visual Studio

  • 28 years of experience in full life cycle software development preferably in mixed development environments (classified/unclassified)

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • Knowledge of engineering discipline(s) (e.g., electrical, mechanical, software engineering) applied to product related systems (e.g., aircraft, avionics, propulsion, spacecraft, information/ communication systems) throughout the product development life cycle, from concept development to deployment

  • Knowledge of specification format requirements, guidelines, and change control processes

  • Understanding of relationship between specifications/standards and aircraft/product certification systems

  • Knowledge of product lifecycle, including manufacturing, deployment, modification, aging and continued service, and disposal

  • Knowledge of how to derive and allocate requirements (e.g., system, sub-system, software) and show traceability throughout the product lifecycle

  • Knowledge of software development processes in compliance with established internal and industry standards, guidelines, and best practices in the development, testing, and deployment of software

  • Knowledge of implementation, validation, and verification processes, practices, and guidelines to ensure software development quality, performance, and safety

  • Ability to understand the big picture and the inter-relationships of all positions and activities in the system, including the impact of changes in one area on another area

  • This includes the ability to see and understand the inter-relationships between components of systems and plans, anticipate future events, and apply the principles of systems thinking to accelerate performance

  • Skill and ability to: collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources

Summary pay range for Senior: $229,000.00 - $263,000.00.
