Who we are

We are an organisation that exists to drive progress. That's the “red thread” that connects everyone at The Economist Group (TEG). Our businesses share a devotion to innovation, independence and rigour in their fields of expertise. We empower people to understand and tackle the critical challenges and changes facing the world. Our analytical rigour, global expertise and evidence-based insights enable individuals and organisations to make sense of these shifts and chart a course through them.

We deliver analysis and insights in many formats to subscribers and clients in 170 countries through our four businesses, The Economist, Economist Impact, Economist Intelligence and Economist Education, which uphold our global reputation for excellence and integrity.

What are we looking for?

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) is a world leader in global business intelligence. We help businesses, the financial sector and governments to understand how the world is changing and how that creates opportunities to be seized and risks to be managed.

At our heart is a 50 year forward look, a global forecast of the majority of the world’s economies, we seek to analyze the future and deliver that insight through multiple channels and insights, allowing our clients to take better trading, investment and policy decisions.

We’re changing, embedding alternate data sources and developing a completely modern Forecasting Data Platform that will increasingly be tailored to individual clients, driven by some of the most innovative data in the market. A highly collaborative team of Product management, Customer Experience and Product Engineering is being created with a focus on creating business and customer value driven by real time analytics alongside our traditional products.

How you will contribute:

  • Build data pipelines: creating and maintaining data pipelines and ETL processes in AWS based infrastructure
  • Support and Transition: Support and optimize our Forecasting Data Platform built on a serverless cloud native architecture.
  • Work in an agile environment: within a collaborative agile cross-functional product team using Scrum and Kanban
  • Collaborate across departments: Work in close relationship with data product team and business (economists/data) analysts in refining their data requirements for various initiatives and data consumption requirements
  • Participate in ensuring compliance and governance during data use: To ensure that the data users and consumers use the data provisioned to them responsibly through data governance and compliance initiatives.
  • Work within, and encourages a Devops culture and Continuous Delivery process

To succeed in this role it would be ideal if you possess

  • Experience with programming in Python, Spark, and SQL.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services, including AWS Lambda, Glue, Step Functions, Fargate and CDK.
  • Experience with Docker containerization and managing container images using AWS ECR.
  • Experience with Apache Iceberg or a similar lakehouse engine.
  • Knowledge of building custom ETL solutions.
  • Data modeling and T-SQL experience for managing business data and reporting.
  • Ability to perform technical deep dives into code and architecture.
  • Ability to design, build, and manage data pipelines for data structures encompassing data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata, and workload management.
  • Effective communication skills.
