Your role at Baxter

The Director, AI and Data Science is a technical leadership role. This position will manage 20+ technology experts globally supporting all segments and functions. This leader will lead development and deployment of AI solutions and products across the enterprise as we scale and embed AI into all of our core operational, financial, and clinical processes. This leader will engage senior and executive leadership in our business areas to understand their most significant and valuable business challenges, assess the viability and value of leveraging AI to solve these challenges, design new data science products and solutions to automate or enable better decision making, provide leadership and vision by setting best practices and processes for data science, and clearly communicate the value and impact of AI. This leader will have direct leadership over delivery teams consisting of data scientists, app developers, and engineers.

An ideal candidate is someone who has a demonstrated track record of successfully leading and delivering large-scale and complex analytical products and solutions, a history of mentoring and leading junior staff, is passionate about understanding healthcare and business processes, has an ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences, enjoys creative problem-solving, possesses a strong customer and user-centric approach, and is passionate about inspiring change. Experience and demonstrated success leveraging technologies like Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), Generative AI (GenAI), and Natural Language Processing (NLP).

This role requires a unique blend of technical expertise, strategic vision, and leadership to advance AI-driven solutions in medical device applications while ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

What you'll be doing

  • Direct leadership over growing delivery teams consisting of data scientists, app developers, and engineers
  • Partners with product, tech, and business leaders to advance and deliver on our strategic vision to harness emerging AI advances, such as generative AI and continuous self-learning, while addressing fundamental invention challenges in AI for data (discovery, redaction, cleansing) and data for AI (fusing across sources, types, quality).
  • Leads a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers to deliver AI powered products that deliver value
  • Leverages a broad stack of technologies — Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, VectorDBs, and more — to reveal the insights hidden within huge volumes of numeric and textual data
  • Builds AI foundation models through all phases of development, from design through training, evaluation, validation, and implementation
  • Engages in high impact applied research to take the latest AI developments and push them into the next generation of customer experiences
  • Drive AI Strategy & Innovation including exploration and adoption of emerging AI and Generative AI (GenAI) technologies:
  • Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Vision-Language Models (VLMs) and multimodal AI
  • Agentic solutions for automation
  • Text-to-image models
  • Domain-specific and embedding-based AI models
  • Design experimental AI solutions to enhance medical device capabilities and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI into clinical decision support, regulatory compliance, and product innovation.

What you'll bring

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of experience in software development, AI engineering, and machine learning.
  • 10+ years of leadership experience, managing AI teams and projects.
  • Proven experience in ML, NLP, GenAI, and Deep Learning, with expertise in LLMs, multimodal AI, and agentic automation.
  • Hands-on experience with AI frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, LangChain, Hugging Face) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).Has hands-on experience developing AI foundation models and solutions using open-source tools and cloud computing platforms
  • Has a deep understanding of the foundations of AI methodologies
  • Experience building LLMs or large computer vision models as well as expertise in one or more key subdomain such as: training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability
  • Strong background in AI-driven application development, including RAG-based solutions, text-to-image models, and GenAI-powered assistants.
  • Experience in medical AI applications, regulatory compliance, and AI governance is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with graph-based AI, embeddings, metadata retrieval, and Microsoft Graph API integration.
  • An engineering mindset as shown by a track record of delivering models at scale both in terms of training data and inference volumes
  • Experience in delivered libraries, platform level code or solution level code to existing products
  • Highly skilled and experienced at negotiating conflict and problem-solving to achieve win-win outcomes at executive levels.
  • Exceptional ability to lead change using positive and collaborative methods.
  • Deep market trends understanding of the advancement and applicability of technology.
  • Outstanding communication, presentation and leadership skills.

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all our employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $184,000 - 253,000 USD annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, and/or long-term incentive.
