What is the role?  

The Principal Data Engineer is the bridge between architecture and engineering, focusing our efforts on designing and building globally scalable and re-usable data solutions. This role covers all aspects of real-time and near real-time streaming, bulk or batch processing of data as well as API design and implementation. 

Please note that we are looking for candidates from Sydney or Brisbane only for this role.

• Develop best practices and supporting architectures for data onboarding and warehousing

• Guide and mentor development teams across the company to promote the opportunities available to us when we build our own solutions

• Guide and mentor teams across the company in opportunity analysis and problem solving

• Guide and mentor Data Engineering teams on cloud-first approaches to ingestion, and transformation of data and data management

• Be the champion and subject matter expert within the business for data engineering

• Be a "force multiplier" for Data Engineering by designing and implementing reusable software components and data models which promote c

• Consistent approaches to data ingestion and transformation

• Broad technical mastery across domains; leads high-stakes design efforts

• Architects complex systems across teams or products

• Solves ambiguous, large-scale technical problems with novel approaches

• Influences several teams; drives alignment across architecture decisions

• Aligns cross-team stakeholders around technical goals

  Leads technical decisions with design/product for initiatives or platforms

• Mentors engineers and tech leads across teams

  Helps define standards (e.g., testing, security, reliability) org-wide

• Leads technical execution of cross-functional projects

  Balances tech trade-offs with business value across multiple teams

• Data Quality & Validation (Testing frameworks, anomaly detection)
• System Design (Design for scale, availability, cost)
• Cloud Architecture (AWS, GCP)
• Data Lakehouse & Mesh Concepts (Data Lake, Iceberg, data products)
• Real-Time Systems (Event-driven architecture)
• Python, SQL, Scala, Java (Fluent in 2+ languages)
• CI/CD & DevOps for Data Pipelines (GitHub Actions, Terraform, Jenkins)
• Technical Leadership (Mentorship, Technology vision)
• Cross-Functional Collaboration (Work with product, architecture data science, infrastructure)
• Tool and Process Innovation (Evaluate/build tools to increase velocity)
