About the Role

 

The EHS-IT team supporting the MassHealth (MH) within the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EHS) is seeking an Artificial Intelligence Intern. The person hired for this position should have prior AI experience to support our existing chatbot built on AWS and build new solutions but not limited to: requirements, design, development, testing and implementation. The person hired will be working closely with and will be reporting directly to the MSD Director as well as working with broader EHS IT/ MH IT teams supporting MH. The ideal candidate will focus on adding new features, fixing bugs, improving accessibility, addressing security vulnerabilities, and ensuring high code quality to align with FedRAMP compliance and industry best practices.

 

The primary work location for this role will be at 100 Hancock St, Quincy, Massachusetts 02171. The work schedule for this position is Monday thru Friday, 8:00AM to 4:00PM EST.  This position would be expected to follow a hybrid model of reporting to work that combines in-office workdays and work from home days as needed. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhance and extend chatbot functionality using AWS Bedrock, Amazon Kendra, and AWS Comprehend.
  • Fix bugs and optimize performance to ensure smooth chatbot interactions.
  • Identify and resolve security vulnerabilities to improve FedRAMP compliance and fix static scan-related findings.
  • Improve and enforce code quality by refactoring existing code, following best practices, and implementing automated checks.
  • Enhance accessibility in compliance with ADA, WCAG, and other industry standards.
  • Implement real-time enhancements using WebSockets to improve chatbot responsiveness.
  • Refactor and improve APIs using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, and AWS CDK.
  • Improve front-end chatbot UI built with React and TypeScript for a better user experience.
  • Strengthen authentication and authorization mechanisms using Amazon Cognito.
  • Optimize application performance and scalability using CloudFront, DynamoDB, caching strategies, and AWS best practices.
  • Review and address static code analysis findings from SAST (Static Application Security Testing) tools.
  • Collaborate with security teams to ensure secure coding practices and regulatory compliance.
  • Work in an Agile environment, collaborating with UX/UI designers, DevOps engineers, and product managers.
  • Triage production support feedback.  Ensure accuracy.
  • Work on other MassHealth AI applications as needed.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in software development, focusing on AWS-based applications.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and JavaScript (Node.js or TypeScript).
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services, including Lambda, API Gateway, Cognito, CloudFront, CloudFormation, Kendra, Bedrock, and Comprehend.
  • Experience with WebSockets for real-time communication.
  • Deep understanding of security best practices, including FedRAMP compliance and vulnerability remediation.
  • Experience improving code quality, refactoring, and following secure coding principles.
  • Ability to fix static code scan findings and implement automated code review processes.
  • Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards to enhance chatbot usability.
  • Experience with AWS CDK for infrastructure automation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in an Agile development environment.
  • Experience supporting AI applications and help with culture change needed for improving quality of documentation and applications.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines.
