Contract - Platform Data Engineer

The Role, why is this a contract?

Our Series A–fuelled marketplace has already processed £170 million in transactions and is accelerating fast. We’re now upgrading our analytics foundation on AWS and need an experienced data-platform specialist to evaluate, select (in partnership with leadership) and then productionise a single modern cloud warehouse—Snowflake or Databricks.

You’ll be the senior hands-on engineer who turns that choice into a secure, scalable, well-documented platform the permanent team can run once you roll off.

• Location: Hybrid—Soho office twice a week

• Start: ASAP (target mid-July 2025

Your six-month roadmap:

Month 1

Key outcomes:

1. Discovery: map data sources, workloads, SLAs.

2. Assist CTO & CPO with the structured bake-off between Snowflake and Databricks.

3. Deliver target architecture, migration plan and resource estimate for the chosen platform.

Month 2–3: Foundation build

1. Stand up the selected platform with Dev/Test/Prod, security boundaries and cost guard-rails.

2. Lift critical pipelines into Spark/SQL jobs, Delta/ICEBERG tables or Snowflake tasks/streams.

3. Introduce CI/CD and observability (GitHub Actions, Datadog/Monte Carlo).

Month 4–5: Modelling & Enablement

1. Re-model the warehouse with dbt (bronze/silver/gold or star schema).

2. Expose governed datasets to BI (Looker/Power BI).

3. Draft data contracts, coding standards and runbooks.

Month 6: Hardening & Handover

1. Performance tuning, cost optimisation, DR drills.

2. Knowledge-transfer bootcamps + documentation.

3. Sign-off with CTO.

Day-to-day responsibilities:

• Design and implement cloud-native ELT/ETL pipelines in Python, Spark and SQL.

• Configure security, lineage, quality and cost-control best practices on the chosen warehouse.

• Build infra-as-code (Terraform/CloudFormation) and automated tests; enable blue/green deploys for data assets.

• Partner with Product, Finance and Ops to unlock analytics and regulatory reporting.

What you bring:

• 10+ years in data engineering, 3+ at staff/lead level, including at least one green-field Snowflake or Databricks rollout.

• Expert in Python, Spark (batch & streaming) and advanced SQL.

• Deep AWS (S3, Glue, IAM) plus Terraform or CloudFormation.

• Proven record of hardening data platforms for scale, cost and security (ISO 27001 / SOC 2).

• Clear communicator who documents obsessively and hands over cleanly.

Nice-to-haves:

• Dbt mastery, FinTech or supply-chain experience, TypeScript/Java familiarity.
