Purpose of Position
This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.
Are you passionate about solving complex problems with data, technology, and innovative thinking? We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented AI/Database Intern to join our team and support the development of a first-of-its-kind, searchable North Dakota industry intelligence repository.
In this role, you’ll collaborate with ND SBDC staff and a fellow intern to design, structure, and populate a custom database of verified business information collected from real-world business plans and financials. You’ll also support the integration of artificial intelligence to improve how advisors and clients access relevant data for planning and decision-making.
This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in AI applications, data structuring, and business intelligence. You’ll build valuable technical and strategic skills while working on a meaningful project that addresses real needs in North Dakota’s most rural communities.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist in designing the structure and functionality of a digital repository of business plans, projections, and other key documents
- Support the development of keyword-based search functionality that filters data by industry, financing program, geographic location, and more
- Collaborate with staff to write and test AI prompts that enable fast, accurate, and context-specific data retrieval
- Validate AI-generated outputs to ensure results are accurate and relevant to user goals
- Document prompt-testing procedures and outcomes to guide future refinement
- Contribute to process improvements and brainstorm ways to scale the tool’s usefulness across centers
- Explore AI integration with existing SBDC planning tools to embed local comp data directly into business plan builders
- Gain exposure to rural economic development needs and strategies through project immersion

Minimum Requirements
- Currently enrolled UND student, at least at sophomore status
- Major field of study in business, economics, data science, computer science, or a related field
- Related experience via coursework, internship, or independent project work
- Graduating no earlier than May 2026

Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with prompt engineering and AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)
- Experience structuring or working with databases or repositories
- Basic understanding of financial or business planning documents
- Interest in rural or small business development
- Prior teamwork experience on technical or data-focused projects
