Data Reporter, Times Union

The Times Union has an immediate opening for an ambitious, versatile journalist to work in a fast-paced newsroom on the biggest stories in upstate New York. The reporter will join a desk focused on quick-turn graphics-focused stories, interactive projects and data-driven deep dives. 

 The successful candidate will hustle and compete on the biggest stories in the Capital Region and Hudson Valley while seeking to engage readers online through reporting, data analysis, static graphics and interactive elements.  

We’re seeking a self-starter with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills, and is comfortable providing and taking feedback. We want a teammate who aspires to be a key player in an exciting, modern news operation that values a smart, local readership and aims to take risks in how we report and present journalism online. 

What the data reporter will do:

  • Report and write graphics- and data-driven articles for timesunion.com.
  • Conceive ideas and work with editors and developers to enhance our storytelling.
  • Contribute to high-impact digital projects produced across newsroom teams.
  • Create assets to help promote and distribute the team’s work.

What it will take to be successful: 

  • Experience in a modern newsroom or a related work environment.
  • Strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness.
  • Ability to report stories and write and build quickly while keeping the strictest commitment to fairness and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of multimedia storytelling, social media engagement and other strategies to broaden readership.
  • Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams and work in a fast-changing news environment. 
  • Plus: Web development or data visualization experience.

Requirements: 

  • Expertise in data analysis and data visualization, using tools such as R, Python, SQL, Datawrapper, D3, and Adobe Illustrator/ai2html.
  • Any experience with the following tools/systems is a plus:
  • Backend languages such as Node or PHP.
  • APIs and the use of web-scraping tools alongside AWS systems such as S3, EC2, Lambda.
  • HTML, CSS, JavaScript and relevant code libraries.
  • Front-end frameworks like React, Svelte or Vue.
  • This position is full-time and based in Albany, New York.

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in New York. The reasonable estimate, if hired is $60,000-$70,000.  If this role is open to candidates outside of these state, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location.  A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
