Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) - housed in our Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) - is a research organization focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers. CSET currently focuses on artificial intelligence, advanced computing and biotechnology.
We are seeking applications for Senior Data Research Analyst position(s).
They are members of CSET’s data team, working within our Lines of Research to produce data-driven research in collaboration with CSET’s analysis teams.
These dynamic roles serve as a bridge between our data and analysis teams and combine knowledge of research methods, data analysis, and data science.
Reporting to CSET’s Director of Data Science and Research, Senior Data Research Analysts are responsible for:
- Designing and executing new data-driven research projects within an established Line of Research, scoping research questions, and working with collaborators and junior analysts with limited supervision.
- Authoring and co-authoring written publications, including policy briefs and data briefs
- Supporting research through data-focused tasks, including but not limited to identifying and evaluating data sources, preparing datasets for analysis, applying appropriate methods to extract information from datasets, and conducting data/code reviews
- Developing data visualizations for use in presentations and reports
- Collaborating with data scientists and software engineers to ingest (ETL) structured and unstructured datasets into Google Cloud Platform, apply Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), predictive modeling, and other advanced techniques to evaluate hypotheses and derive data-driven insights
- Communicating, in written and verbal formats, CSET’s data resources and data-driven findings to a range of audiences, including translating CSET’s data work into external presentations and publications for policy and academic audiences
- Monitoring trends and developments in AI, ML, biotechnology, and national security policy
- Contributing to CSET’s organizational development, including internal working groups, seminars, and discussions; and supporting and mentoring colleagues
- Upholding CSET’s mission, values and culture
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field and 5+ years of experience in data analysis or Masters’ degree in relevant field and 2+ years of experience in data analysis
- 3+ years of experience with SQL and/or Python
- Experience working with a cloud computing platform
- Published at least 3 papers comparable to a CSET data brief as lead/individual or co-author
- Competence in at least one of CSET’s research topics or data science methodologies
- Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute research projects
- Ability to process and analyze data sets, interpret them to derive conclusions, and present findings with limited supervision; and to coach/guide colleagues to successfully complete their tasks
- Ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative team environment
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written, demonstrated through the development of publications and delivery of presentations
- Motivated, enthusiastic and self-driven
This position is based in the United States and offers no relocation assistance. Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$103,723.00 - $202,778.93Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
