3M is seeking an experienced Data Scientist – Digitization and Advanced Analytics in our Enterprise Supply Chain organization located in Maplewood, Minnesota. At 3M, you can apply your talents in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As a Data Scientist you will exercise your passion for digging into large amounts of data, both known and unknown, structured and unstructured. To be successful you need to have a strong interest in developing data and analytics solutions to address business problems and be able to interact effectively with both the technology teams and partners in one or more of the end-to-end supply chain functional areas (Plan, Source, Make and Deliver).  As a member of this team, you will contribute significantly to the vision of our data environment and to Enterprise Supply Chain advanced analytics and data science capabilities.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct a variety of data analytics such as: predictive modeling, statistics, machine learning, data mining, and other data analysis techniques to extract insights from structured and unstructured data.
  • Research and explore data sources, work with data and systems experts to understand the data and what it represents
  • Participate in projects related to machine learning, Generative AI, data mining, and computational statistics
  • Work independently to develop data solutions, understand, break down and explain complex algorithms
  • Deploy artificial intelligence methods including optimization, classification, LLMs, probabilistic reasoning, and neural networks to solve business problems and surface insights.
  • Use various forecast methods including time series, neural networks and other non-linear methods
  • Implement relevant computational algorithms in software that support 3M business
  • Build strong working relationships and communicate effectively with other engineers and data scientists

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics (completed and verified prior to start)
  • Two (2) years of advanced data analysis experience (e.g. predictive modeling, statistics, machine learning, data mining) in a private, public, government or military environment
  • One (1) year of experience in programming in Python and/or R
  • One (1) year of experience in applied machine learning and algorithm development in a Supply Chain context

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics
  • Experience with machine learning tools including SVM, logistic regression, and random forest
  • Experience with big data and distributed computing platforms, such as Apache Spark
  • Experience with deep learning methods and applications
  • SQL experience
  • SAP experience
  • Experience in computer or scientific programming
  • Solid communication skills

Location: Maplewood, MN; Hybrid/Remote options available

Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international

Relocation: Is not authorized

This range represents a good faith estimate for this position.
