The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. Salary
The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $135,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Information
The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Assistant Director, Student Success Dashboard Data Scientist to devise and oversee the implementation of the research and data analytics strategy for the CSU Student Success Dashboard and related data-dashboard properties. The incumbent will also manage data analytics personnel and partner with CO and campus leaders in the development of innovative data models that identify opportunities for increasing graduation rates and eliminating equity gaps. The Assistant Director will identify new data sources and oversee all aspects of the dashboard’s data architecture. The Assistant Director will also guide the development, validation, and implementation of both descriptive and predictive analytic algorithms in support of Graduation Initiative 2025 and any ensuing system-wide student success initiatives.
This position is approved for telecommuting (two days telecommuting, three days in office (in-person)) with onsite work at the main headquarters located in Long Beach, California.
Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Director, Student Success Initiatives, the Assistant Director, Student Success Dashboard Data Scientist will:
-Oversee and lead the creation and management of dashboard data sets and data assets.
-Provide direct supervision and managerial support for the Dashboard Data Scientist position.
-Manage and provide data analytics leadership and guidance to non-data technical staff (UI designer, and full-stack developer) in the development of data dashboards and campus reports.
-Provide managerial oversight for the processes of collecting and normalizing dashboard data files, merging them with internal and external data sources, and generating statistical results using commercial and homegrown software.
-Manage and lead professional development sessions to help campus leaders better understand opportunities for leveraging the dashboard to foster cultures of evidence on their campuses.
-Collaborate with CO Institutional Research and Analyses department, CO Information Technologies department, CSU campuses, and external agencies to identify new data sources, extract and explore new data, and report on new developments from our team.
-Using knowledge of statistical modeling techniques, discern appropriate approaches needed to develop and implement models that assess trends in data, identify key predictor variables or factors, and generate predictive models to forecast future behaviors and outcomes.
-Evaluate alternative modeling solutions and identify best practices.
-Validate and refine dashboard content and implementations and assure the quality and accuracy of Dashboard reports.
-Work with Director and Associate Vice Chancellor to develop requirements for implementing and overseeing campus participation in the CSU Student Success Dashboard and in providing guidance to campus stakeholders to implement the CSU Student Success Dashboard.
-Collaborate with CO Institutional Research and Analyses department, CO Information Technology department, CSU campuses and external agencies to collect new dashboard data in support of Student Success initiatives.
-Generate statistical results using commercial and homegrown software (SAS, SPSS, R, M-Plus, etc.)
-Problem-solve to meet dashboard reporting requirements.
Qualifications
This position requires:
-Master’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Psychometrics, Sociology, Public Health, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or related field.
-A minimum of 4 years of professional experience managing, developing and implementing strategies for gathering, processing, cleaning, and creating reports, graphs, maps, and/or other visualizations.
-A minimum of 4 years of professional experience managing, developing, testing, and analyzing statistical and descriptive models for real-world applications.
-A minimum of 4 years of professional experience working within a team to present data analytic results in data visualization-based reports.
-Experience working with higher education data sets.
-Experience providing data analytics professional development to foster cultures of evidence.
-Supervisory and/or project management experience.
-Proficiency in R and SAS statistical programming/scripting languages.
-Experience creating and working with MySQL data tables.
-Proficiency running SQL queries.
-Proficiency in Python.
-Experience with Higher Ed institutional data sets.
-Experience training others to use Higher Ed institutional data sets.
-Ability to provide good judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
-Ability to present complex findings and recommendations in a clear concise manner both in writing and verbally.
-Active listening, critical thinking, good interpersonal skills and ability to multi-task.
-Knowledge of qualitative content analytic techniques.
-Experience with research/data analytic, predictive analytic, and other data-based forecasting methods.
-Demonstrated experience working with cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional work.
Preferred Qualifications
-2-3 years’ experience extracting and applying data from PeopleSoft systems.
