PRESTO is an electronic transit fare payment system in the Greater Toronto, Hamilton and Ottawa areas that eliminates the need for tickets, passes and cash. PRESTO serves more than 5 million customers across 11 transit agencies and processes over $2.5 billion in fares through 67 million boardings per month (pre-pandemic). Today, PRESTO offers one of the most globally advanced fare payment systems in the world having delivered new ways to pay for customers, including real time PRESTO Contactless with credit and Interac debit and PRESTO in Mobile Wallet across its transit agency clients, including the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). Our Payments (PRESTO) Office is looking for a Senior Manager, Data Engineering and Platforms. This individual will provide leadership and expertise in the development of cyber Data Engineering and Platform related strategies, enterprise architecture, reference models and roadmaps, including application, infrastructure and cloud system elements and incorporates subject matter expertise, governance and design in order to implement, coordinate and maintain the Payments Data Platform strategy and supporting roadmaps. Oversees the design of the organization’s Data Platform architecture in alignment with the Enterprise Architecture (EA) technological vision and direction to support the organization’s strategic and operational goals. They will be reporting to the Director, Technology Cloud Infrastructure and Integration.
What will I be doing?- Overall accountable for the identification of the changing Data Engineering and Platform landscape and delivery of Data Engineering and Platform services into the Metrolinx environment
- Leads, defines and monitors Data Engineering and Platform (DE&P) team’s yearly operating plan and performance objectives to monitor for quality and excellent delivery of services
- Manages the development, implementation and refresh of strategies, roadmaps, infrastructure and Data Architecture blueprint, roadmap and patterns relating to Data Engineering and Platform across entire PRESTO eco-systems
- Work closely with the Product Delivery teams to communicate all strategies, roadmaps and patterns relating to business application development and deployment
- Oversees the development of requirements for technology acquisitions that support the roadmaps and patterns
- Provides leadership to the Metrolinx organization on the Data Engineering and Platform relating to Operational Technology (OT) as well as its integration with Information Technology (IT)
- Manages the development and implementation of management and governance practices and frameworks to ensure consistency, quality, reliability and integrity;
- Provides leadership towards defining the role of SA/IA DE&P and leads its implementation and governance; implementation and maintenance of Metrolinx’s DE&P infrastructure and services.
- Leads the SA/IA DE&P team regarding the direction of existing and potential corporate / solutions, emerging solutions, and new products
- Provides expert opinion on the effectiveness and completeness of product roadmaps and alignment with Metrolinx Payments, I&IT and other applicable cross-organization roadmaps
- Bridges the gap between business and technology and communicates security/infrastructure Data Platform architecture-related concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences across the organization’s business functions;
- Assesses the business/technical feasibility of vendor designs and advises on the impact to current SA/IA DE&P infrastructure posture and future systems;
- Recommends solutions, priorities and advises on resource requirements;
- Defines and manages the integration between multiple partners that provide security DE&P solutions and services to Metrolinx
- Provides expert opinion to key business and stakeholders on the effectiveness and completeness of product roadmaps and alignment with Metrolinx technology and other applicable cross-organization roadmaps.
- Supports managing the relationship with vendors including providing technical direction to vendor contracts, when required
- Develops and monitors KPIs and / or metrics to measure the success of the team
- Leads the provision of continuous improvement services to mature related policies, processes and practices, through understanding of DE&P global best practices;
- Develops and manages annual and long-term staffing plans and budget requirements that adhere to corporate standards and applicable legislation; meets service delivery objectives and manages team activities within budgetary limits
- Understands the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for the enterprise, working with the application and infrastructure architects to understand the TCO for specific functional areas
- Creates a working environment that is aligned with the organization’s desire to be “an employer of choice”, ensuring that people resources possess the required skills, are properly aligned, and are provided with the resources to do the job;
- Provides senior leadership oversight and direction to staff and project teams (e.g. defines team member roles, responsibilities, and expectations); delivers timely feedback to ensure a cohesive operational unit and the optimum use of team skills; manages staff and monitors work assignments to ensure adherence to timelines; monitors the achievement of performance objectives; develops and implements action plans to address performance gaps
- Completion of a degree: University Degree in Business, a technical domain such as Computer Science, Engineering, Systems Design, Computer Sciences, Math or IT or related discipline – or a combination of advanced/specialist technical certification, requiring an equivalent number of years of post-secondary education
- Demonstrated experience of contributing to the success of a range of midsize-to-large initiatives with above average levels of complexity and business criticality progressively senior experience in Information Technology with significant exposure to modern Data Platform planning, design, development, implementation and maintenance
- Experience designing, architecting, delivering and supporting Data Platforms with high availability and disaster recovery capabilities that meet Data Strategy requirements using Azure services such as (not limited to) Lakehouse medallion-lake architecture, ADF pipelines, Spark Pool, Databricks, Fabric, Observability services like Elastic, Azure Virtual Machines, Azure App Services, and Azure Kubernetes Service
- Public Cloud Certification (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) at professional/advanced level is an asset
- Serves as the organization’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) in one or more of the following architecture domains, including: Data Engineering and Platform, information architecture, infrastructure architecture, application architecture, business architecture and/or security architecture to provide advice/expertise on technology product roadmaps and delivery
- Expert knowledge and understanding of the latest concepts in SA/IA DE&P through certifications (i.eDP-900, DP-203 etc)
- Leverages modern Data Platforms technical expertise to validate that product designs, configurations / developments and resulting implementations follow the latest reference architecture, ensuring that the results meet the expectations of technology stakeholders and business users who use the product
- Management and leadership skills to manage a team of professionals; develop long term staffing/capacity plans; provide oversight/lead staff/teams across the organization on cross-functional program implementation initiatives; comfortable working with remote team members
- Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation skills to brief/update senior/executive leadership, prepare project/program related reports and materials, deliver presentations and provide subject matter expertise to consultants, staff, and decision-makers
