Walmart
What’s a career at Walmart or Sam’s Club like? To find out, explore our culture, our opportunities and the difference you can make.Position Summary...
We are building a first‑party, privacy‑centric advertising platform that unites retail data, smart‑TV inventory, and a growing CTV publisher network. Our mission is to deliver relevant, measurable ad experiences while giving consumers full control of their data. What you'll do...
As an Ad Tech Engineer on our CTV team, you will design, build, and scale low‑latency services that power server‑side ad insertion (SSAI), dynamic ad decisioning, and real‑time measurement across millions of smart TVs and OTT devices. You’ll collaborate with product managers, data scientists, privacy engineers, and DSP/SSP partners to create an end‑to‑end stack that bridges broadcast‑quality video with programmatic precision.
Key Responsibilities
Ad Delivery & Decisioning
Develop microservices for ad selection, pacing, and frequency capping that handle >100 k QPS under <100 ms p99 latency.
Implement VAST 4.x / VAST 4.2, SCTE‑35 cue‑tone parsing, and OpenRTB 2.6 bid request/response logic for CTV.
Streaming & SSAI
Build and optimize HLS/DASH manifest manipulation and stitched‑segment workflows using AWS MediaTailor, GCP Media CDN, or an in‑house stack.
Ensure frame‑accurate ad breaks and seamless transitions across HDR, 4K, and variable‑bitrate profiles.
Measurement & Privacy
Integrate IAB OM‑SDK‑CTV signals, ACR fingerprints, and privacy‑preserving identifiers (PPIDs, EIDs) to attribute outcomes in real time.
Partner with the privacy team to apply differential privacy, on‑device ML models, and clean‑room pipelines (e.g., Secure Multi‑Party Computation) for closed‑loop ROAS measurement.
Programmatic Interfaces
Build APIs for header‑bidding adapters, Prebid.js/Prebid Server for CTV, and custom RTB auctions supporting deal‑IDs, first‑party audiences, and dynamic floors.
Work with supply‑side and demand‑side partners to certify integrations and troubleshoot bid‑stream anomalies.
Reliability & Observability
Automate rollouts via Kubernetes and GitOps; enforce canary releases and blue/green deployments.
Instrument distributed tracing (OpenTelemetry), anomaly detection, and SLA dashboards to guarantee five‑nines uptime during live sports and tent‑pole events.
Collaboration & Leadership
Translate product requirements into engineering design docs, influence architecture decisions, and mentor junior engineers.
Contribute to open‑source Ad Tech projects (Prebid, Video.js, IAB Tech Lab) and represent the company in industry working groups.
About the team:
Walmarts Advertising Technology group enables the connection between supplier brands and retail shoppers at unprecedented scale. We are a highly motivated group of engineers and data scientists, working in an agile group to solve sophisticated and high impact problems. We serve billions of ad requests every month with our high-performance ad servers.
We build smart data systems that ingest, model, analyze and optimize the massive flow of data from online and store user activity and transactions. We use cutting edge machine learning, data mining and optimization algorithms on this data.
Above all, we are laser focused on delivering experiences that our customers and advertisers love.
Minimum Qualifications
8+ years of back‑end software development experience (Golang, Java, Kotlin, C++ or Rust) with production services at scale.
Deep knowledge of video streaming protocols (HLS, DASH, CMAF) and ad‑serving standards (VAST, VPAID, VMAP, SCTE‑35).
Hands‑on experience with programmatic advertising (OpenRTB, header bidding, DSP/SSP APIs) and real‑time bidding pipelines.
Proficiency in AWS, GCP, or Azure cloud infrastructure, container orchestration (Kubernetes/EKS/GKE), and CI/CD.
Strong grasp of data structures, distributed systems, and performance tuning for millisecond‑level latency.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior work on CTV or OTT platforms (Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, Tizen, webOS) and device‑level SDKs.
Experience with SSAI vendors (e.g., Yospace, Stream Stitcher) or building in‑house manifest conditioners.
Familiarity with privacy‑enhancing tech: Private Set Intersection (PSI), Differential Privacy, Federated Learning.
Exposure to data pipelines (Kafka, Flink, Beam) and real‑time analytics (Druid, ClickHouse, BigQuery).
Contributions to IAB/IETF standards or open‑source Ad Tech projects.
Master’s degree in a technical field.
