Lead Data Scientist – Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: Role Overview

As a Lead Data Scientist focused on AI and Machine Learning, you will drive the development and deployment of cutting-edge data science solutions to address complex organisational challenges. You will guide and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, shaping strategic initiatives that innovate and optimise business operations through advanced analytics, predictive modelling, and automation. Key Responsibilities – Lead Data Scientist (AI/ML)

AI/ML Model Architecture and Implementation

• Design, develop, and deploy robust machine learning and deep learning models for a variety of data-driven use cases.
• Select, engineer, and scale relevant features and data pipelines to support high-performing AI solutions.
• Evaluate algorithm performance, applying state-of-the-art optimisation and validation techniques.
• Lead the integration of AI/ML models into secure, scalable production environments.

Advanced Analytics, Data Strategy & Solution Delivery

• Translate complex business problems into actionable data science projects, from exploratory analysis to algorithmic deployment.
• Define data collection strategies and work with stakeholders to source, wrangle, and prepare high-quality datasets.
• Implement best practices in data integrity, governance, and compliance.
• Produce compelling data visualisations and communicate insights to technical and non-technical audiences.

Team Leadership, Collaboration & Continuous Learning

• Mentor and guide a team of junior and mid-level data scientists and engineers, fostering skill development and innovation.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including product, engineering, and business units—to shape and deliver impactful AI/ML initiatives.
• Drive knowledge sharing by introducing new tools, frameworks, and methodologies reflective of AI/ML best practices.
• Champion a culture of inclusiveness, creativity, and continuous improvement within the data science community.

Skills and Experience Required for Senior Data Science Leadership (AI/ML)

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of hands-on experience in applied data science, machine learning, and AI solution delivery.
• Expert proficiency in Python and/or R, along with data science libraries and frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, pandas).
• Demonstrated experience implementing production-grade machine learning solutions and deploying at scale (on-premise or on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Deep knowledge of statistical analysis, data mining, predictive modelling, and data engineering best practices.
• Strong communication skills and proven ability to convey complex technical concepts to a range of audiences.
• Prior experience leading, mentoring, or managing diverse data science teams.
• Experience with MLOps, data pipeline automation, and versioning tools (e.g., MLflow, Airflow, DVC) is highly advantageous.
• Must be eligible to obtain and hold a Public Trust clearance.
