About the role

We are looking for a visionary and technically strong Director of Software Development to lead transformative initiatives across our strategic technology platforms. In this role, you will be responsible for driving software delivery excellence, fostering a product-centric engineering culture, and building strong relationships with business stakeholders.

What you'll do here:

  • Be a part of a multi-year transformation journey in Commercial Lines & Specialty Solutions
  • Manage a large portfolio of initiatives in a variety of technologies, oversee delivery timelines, quality metrics, and operational stability of portfolio.
  • Foster a strong product mindset within engineering teams—partnering closely with product managers, designers, and business stakeholders to align on priorities and outcomes.
  • Serve as a trusted technology advisor to business leaders, translating business objectives into actionable technical strategies.
  • Encourage a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, continuous learning, and accountability.
  • Stay current with industry trends, particularly in AI, machine learning, and intelligent automation, to influence the technology roadmap.
  • Collaborate with security, data, and infrastructure teams to ensure scalable and secure system design.
  • Manage technology budgets, resource planning, and vendor relationships as needed.
  • Contribute to a great work environment by providing exemplary leadership and by mentoring our emerging leaders and managers.
  • Communicate effectively across the organization to ensure that the team is completely aligned to the business objectives.
  • Lead the recruitment, mentoring, and professional development of a diverse and high-caliber engineering team. Foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation to maintain a competitive edge in the insurance technology sector.
  • Cultivate a collaborative and high-performance engineering culture that emphasizes excellence, accountability, and clear alignment with business objectives. Implement metrics and feedback mechanisms to continuously assess and improve team performance and productivity.

What you bring to the table:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing managers.
  • Proven success leading large-scale software delivery in a complex, regulated environment—ideally within insurance or financial services.
  • Strong technical background in modern architectures (cloud-native, microservices, APIs), platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and development practices (CI/CD, DevOps).
  • Experience with or exposure to AI/ML technologies and how they apply to business use cases (e.g., claims automation, underwriting, customer insights…).
  • Demonstrated ability to work across departments and communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders and build strong relationships with business stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of Agile, product-centric development, and customer-first delivery models.
  • Experience with insurance platforms, core systems (e.g., policy admin, claims, billing…), and regulatory environments, an asset.
  • Familiarity with data platforms, AI tools (e.g., Python ML libraries, AI APIs, or LLMs), and intelligent workflow automation.
  • Previous experience driving technology transformation within an engineering organization.
  • Experience managing vendor relationships or hybrid in-house/offshore development models.
  • For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism is required (English and French) - Need to interact on a regular basis with colleagues across the country.
  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
