We are looking for a Senior Research Analyst to join the Grid Edge research team within Wood Mackenzie’s Power & Renewables practice. The Grid Edge team consists of leading analysts covering some of the most cutting-edge topics in the energy transition, including transportation and building electrification, microgrids, distributed energy resource participation in wholesale and retail markets, demand flexibility, and grid modernization. Our research and thought leadership inform the strategies of key players throughout the energy industry, driving innovative business models while hastening the energy transition.
The Senior Analyst will own key workstreams focused on the US, involving data gathering, market forecasting, and research report preparation. This includes assembling and maintaining datasets ranging from utility DER programs to state electrification penetration and policy developments. The Analyst will support the integration of this data into research reports, dashboards, forecast models, and other data platforms.
Forecasting will be a key aspect of the role. The analyst will develop and maintain long-term forecast models of heating electrification and power demand flexibility, based on current market data, policy, and technology trends. They will also collaborate closely with our power team on the inclusion of these forecasts in regional power models.
Main responsibilities
- Support multiple research initiatives in parallel, from initial desk research to slide development
- Perform data gathering, validation, and entry on a recurring basis, leveraging AI when possible
- This includes data on project developments, technology deployment and cost, policy developments, and corporate activity. This is accomplished through:
- Announcement tracking, regulatory filing review, and other desk research
- Correspondence with companies
- Develop and maintain US heating electrification, residential demand flexibility, and commercial demand flexibility forecast models
- Support our North America Power Team in incorporating forecast model updates into their recurring long-term regional outlooks
- Support the preparation of research reports, consulting reports, presentations, and client deliverables, in particular developing PowerPoint slides and Excel data sheets
- Take a leading role in the publication of our annual US DER Outlook report and quarterly Grid Edge Quarterly Executive Briefing reports
- Develop and maintain client-facing dashboards and support dataset integrations into Wood Mackenzie data platforms
- Collaborate with our North American Power Team to incorporate load and flexibility forecasts into regional power models
Qualifications
- A Bachelors degree in a social, physical, or environmental science, or policy
- 5+ years of professional experience in the energy industry, ideally in a research capacity
- Strong data modeling and forecasting skills, leveraging Excel and python
- Experience with python data science libraries, Jupyter notebooks, Git, AWS, and SQL
- Understanding of the US market, including utility regulation, ISOs/RTOs, DERs, and major companies
- Strong research abilities, and the willingness to learn how to mine public datasets, regulatory filings, and financial disclosures
- A desire to spend your days deep in data, particularly data gathering and validation
- Experience using AI tools to accelerate desk research
- Strong written and spoken English language skills
- Excellent time-management, including the ability to manage projects in parallel and to balance short- and long-term priorities
Nice to haves:
- Experience in the US power sector, dealing specifically with utilities and DERs
- Understanding of heating electrification and the heat pump market
- Very strong coding and tech skills, including modeling automation, EC2 management, and devops
