Position Description
Employee Benefits helps millions of everyday Americans ensure that when accidents and illnesses happen, their families don't also have to deal with financial difficulties. Hartford Employee Benefits (EB) is charged with delivering products and innovative analysis to capitalize on a shifting market to drive profitable growth. We are looking for an actuary with experience working on strategic projects and ideally with expertise in employer group insurance products such as Group Term Life, Group Long Term Disability, Group Short Term Disability, and related insurance coverages, such as Supplemental Health and Dental/Vision, to support pricing and analytics. The candidate will fill a key role within actuarial and will have the opportunity to influence cross-product strategic projects and initiatives as well as implement innovative solutions to grow the Hartford’s Employee Benefits book of business.
Opportunities:
Interact and collaborate in a team-based environment with colleagues within actuarial as well as business partners in Underwriting, Product, and IT.
Exposure to all products offered in the Employee Benefits (EB) insurance product suite.
Deepen knowledge of sales processes (new business quoting/rating, implementation, renewal, etc.) for all EB products.
Present creative and innovative solutions to capitalize on growth opportunities that both maintain profitability and enhance the customer experience, particularly for the Priority Business market segment (employer groups with <500 employees).
Support and drive projects from discovery and requirements gathering through to implementation and monitoring.
Responsibilities of this position include:
Manage a small team of actuarial support staff.
Represent actuarial on cross-functional strategic projects.
Act as a liaison between EB Actuarial and other business areas and IT teams from project inception through implementation and monitoring.
Support strategic and innovative projects related to rating systems and quoting applications including development of requirements and implementation of changes to support pricing accuracy and efficiency for innovation-related priorities.
Own analysis of rating and quoting system data in support of data collection and process improvement projects.
Ensure connectivity between projects and our data needs.
Identify enhancements and lead efforts to improve rating methodologies, including supporting our rating/quoting systems and analytical capabilities, with a focus on Priority Business market segment.
Potential to work with data science team to solve everyday business problems with potential exposure to R or Python and some advanced analytic techniques.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree with a major in mathematics, actuarial science, or related field of study.
5+ years of experience in an actuarial or related analytical function.
Career ASA or FSA preferred, but open to candidates with commensurate background and skill set.
Strong analytical skills, including strong Excel and ideally ThoughtSpot knowledge.
Effective written and verbal communication and general business management skills are imperative.
Experience participating in cross-functional projects, influencing and driving results for both actuarial and non-actuarial audiences.
Experience assessing risk and knowledge of Employee Benefits product pricing and rating techniques preferred, particularly for Priority Business (<500 employees) market segment.
Intellectual curiosity and strong desire to further one’s knowledge of both the current and forward-looking Employee Benefits landscape.
Database and coding experience with R or other similar programming language a plus.
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work schedule. Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work schedule, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
