Brief Job Overview
We are seeking a talented and motivated Data Scientist to join our team working on the USP Medicine Supply Map. This dynamic role combines journalism, data analysis, and public health advocacy to provide critical insights into the availability and accessibility of essential medicines. The Data Scientist will play a pivotal role in researching, analyzing, and visualizing data related to the medicine supply chain, enabling policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the general public to make informed decisions.

The Data Scientist has the following responsibilities:
• Data Analysis and Research:
o Leverage the USP Medicine Supply Map data platform and the insights generated by the data science team to generate narratives and insights about the US pharmaceutical medicine supply.
o Use statistical techniques to identify trends, patterns, and insights in the medicine supply data.
o Collaborate with internal and external subject matter experts, and data scientists to contextualize the data and inform the storytelling.
• Storytelling and Reporting:
o Transform complex data into compelling and informative narratives, articles, and reports for publication.
o Write engaging and well-researched blog posts, white papers, email alerts, op-eds and other collateral that highlight the findings and implications of the medicine supply data.
o Craft insights and narratives tailored to different client audiences, such as healthcare professionals, policymakers, and patient advocacy groups.
o Respond to media requests by providing accurate and timely information derived from the USP Medicine Supply Map.
• Data Visualization:
o Design and create visually compelling and interactive data visualizations to effectively communicate key findings.
o Utilize data visualization tools such as Tableau, D3.js, or similar software to present data in an accessible and engaging manner.
Who is USP Looking For?
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission, commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices, ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders, along with the following competencies and experience:
• Knowledge of healthcare systems, pharmaceutical industry, and US medicine supply chains required.
• Proven experience as a data scientist, investigative journalist, or data analyst in a journalism or research setting.
• Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools such as Python, R, Tableau, or similar software.
• Strong storytelling skills with the ability to translate complex data into clear and engaging narratives.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
• Familiarity with journalistic ethics, fact-checking processes, and data privacy regulations.
• Experience writing for various platforms, including blogs, reports, and tailored content for different client audiences.
• Ability to effectively respond to media requests, and present information in a clear and relatable way.
• Master's degree in journalism, data science, pharmacy, public health, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of technical research experience.
Additional Desired Preferences
• PhD or similar level of research experience.

Compensation
Base Salary Range: USD $113,000.00 – $147,500.00 annually.
Target Annual Bonus: % Varies based on level of role.
Individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidate’s skill set, experience, qualifications, equity, and other job-related reasons.
