Our Mission

Coventry University Group is a global education group with a mission of Creating Better Futures. We are driven by our passionate belief in the transformational power of education and research to enable and empower our students, colleagues and partners and to improve the world around them. Our people are key to our success and each role contributes to the Group’s ongoing progress in communities around the world.

The Role

Hidalgo Limited / Coventry University wish to recruit a highly motivated data scientist as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate to lead an innovative project.

The post-holder will be delivering a 12-month project focusing on the development and validation of a software system to estimate personal level of risk for heat-related injury/illness when working in thermally challenging industries. The developed software will be incorporated into Hidalgo Limited’s existing, and future, wearable physiological monitoring connected worker solutions.

This post will involve using Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) approaches to deliver a 12-month project focusing on the development and validation of a system to estimate core body temperature that will inform a heat-risk warning system. Estimating core body temperature accurately in multiple industrial settings is integral to providing individualised heat-stress risk monitoring, as it allows Hidalgo to offer optimised solutions across different industries, thus protecting a larger majority of a workforce. The algorithms developed and validated within the KTP will be proprietary to Hidalgo. Information derived from this KTP will also help inform future product development.

The successful candidate will receive extensive practical and formal training, gain marketable skills, broaden their knowledge and expertise within an industrially relevant project, and gain valuable research and commercial experience from business and academic mentors.

About the Company

Hidalgo, under its brand name, Equivital, is an established Cambridge-based leading global supplier of end-to-end real-time physiological monitoring solutions for use in real-world occupational settings. Please review the link below for more information:

A key focus of Hidalgo is to provide actionable information on workers exposed to risk of heat-related injury/illnesses. With rising global temperatures, this is increasingly recognised as a major issue within many occupations. It is estimated that approximately 1 million work life-years will be lost globally by 2030 due to occupational heat stroke fatalities and 70 million work life-years lost because of reduced labour productivity; causing an estimated accumulated global financial loss of $2,400 billion (~£1,817 billion) by 2030.

Hidalgo’s Black Ghost connected worker platform, uses algorithms to provide an actionable measure of the level of heat strain being experienced by an individual worker. It is currently in use in diverse industries, for examples first responders, oil & gas, industrial foundries, chemical plants, warehousing and military training.

What is a KTP?

This position forms part of the KTP initiative funded by Innovate UK. The KTP initiative supports partnerships between business and universities or research organisations, placing graduates (KTP Associates) to work on innovative high-profile projects. Associates work under the supervision of a university academic(s) and the KTP industrial partner.

Qualifications Required

Candidates should possess a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a mathematical or science-based discipline.

Our Successful Candidate

Software development skills are a must and experience working in a software development team is desirable. The candidate will be expected work in both Cambridge (mainly) and Coventry with flexibility to work from home when appropriate. The ideal candidate must be able to communicate effectively (written and verbally) with a range of stakeholders, e.g., academic, technical personnel, sales and marketing personnel, existing company customers, and potential new clients.
