Berlin, DE, 10587
Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft
Discover. Together.
Excellent research and innovation are at the centre of the work of the HHI - Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications. We are a world leader in researching mobile and optical communication networks and systems, as well as machine learning, computer vision, and compressing digital videos. At the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, the Wireless Communications and Networks department pioneers technologies for next-generation wireless communication systems. Our Millimeter Wave (mm-Wave) Group specializes in the design, simulation, and implementation of mobile communication and measurement systems operating up to 500 GHz. Over the past decade, we have developed deep expertise in channel measurements, antenna design, and advanced transceiver technologies such as switch-mode amplifiers and full-duplex transmission. Our work includes custom analog and digital hardware design and experimental system implementations that push the boundaries of what is possible in high-frequency wireless.
Become a part of our team and join us on our journey of research and innovation!
What you will do
- Develop signal processing algorithms (PHY layer) for wireless communications using MATLAB or Python
- Implement and test algorithms on Software Defined Radio (SDR) platforms using C++ and the UHD library
- Configure and optimize computer hardware (e.g., motherboard, CPU, network interface card) and Ubuntu OS kernel, including DPDK, to support high data rate transmission (in the order of several GB/s) to/from SDRs
- Conduct RF measurements and component characterization using lab measurement equipment (e.g., signal generators, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, etc.)
- Support the mm-Wave Group in project-based research, development, and experimental tasks
What you bring to the table
- Enrolled Bachelor's/Master's student in full-time studies in the fields of electrical engineering, physics, or communications engineering with good grades (please send us a document with your grades during your studies)
- Solid understanding of signal processing fundamentals:
- Multirate signal processing (upsampling, downsampling, etc.)
- Spectral analysis (e.g. FFT)
- Sampling Theory (Nyquist, direct sampling, bandpass sampling)
- Inter-symbol interference mitigation (channel estimation and equalization)
- Experience using lab measurement equipment (signal generator, signal analyzer, network analyzer, oscilloscope, DC voltage supply etc.) and Familiarity with Linux/Ubuntu environments is optional
- Strong motivation to thrive in 5G/6G, self-initiative, and interest in wireless communications applied research
- Physical presence in Berlin is required
- English skills, spoken and written, are expected
What you can expect
- Work on cutting-edge challenges in a leading research and innovation environment
- Hands-on experience with modern RF lab equipment and tools
- A supportive and international team culture
- A modern, well-equipped workspace in central Berlin
- Opportunities to write a bachelor's or master's thesis
- The position is initially limited to 1 year. An extension is explicitly desired.
- Flexible working hours
- Attractive salary
