We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Optical Coating Engineer to join our team. As an integral part of our cross-functional team, you will collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to design, develop, and characterize thin film coatings for augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) applications. Your expertise will play a crucial role in delivering exceptional user experiences and shaping the future of display technology.Optical Coating Engineer Responsibilities
  • Design and develop thin film optical coatings for high-volume manufacturing applications, including angular and spectral transmission control, polarization control, phase control, and other specialized requirements, with the consideration of process complexity, yield, reliability, and cost
  • Characterize and analyze the performance of thin film coatings using various techniques, including spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and other relevant methods
  • Develop and optimize optical coating processes, including vacuum deposition techniques (PVD, CVD, ALD), wet coatings and other deposition techniques
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams and external industry partners to integrate coating designs into larger systems and ensure compatibility with other components
  • Troubleshoot coating-related issues and provide technical support to manufacturing teams
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 6+ years of experience in optical coating design, development, and characterization, and manufacturing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of thin film optics, and optical thin film design theory
  • Hands-on experience with coating process development, including vacuum deposition techniques (PVD, CVD, ALD), wet coatings, and optical materials
  • Proficient in optical thin film characterization, associated equipment, and methodologies
  • Proficiency in coating design software, such as Essential Macleod, OptiLayer or TFCalc, and understanding how to incorporate the coating response in optical simulation software, such as FRED, Zemax, or Code V
  • Proven expertise in resolving intricate material and interfacial issues related to optical coating processes in high-volume manufacturing settings, leveraging in-depth knowledge of thin-film physics and process optimization techniques
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with high-volume manufacturing processes and equipment
  • Familiarity with industry-standard quality control procedures and protocols
  • Knowledge of programming languages, such as Python, MATLAB, or C++
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms and their application to optical coating design and optimization
  • Experience in designing and executing experiments using Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies, with expertise in statistical data analysis and interpretation of results to inform process optimization and improvement
