The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) is seeking a motivated candidate with a strong quantitative and programming background, stemming from training and experience in bioinformatics. Experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a pre-requisite. The successful candidate will work in a team of bioinformaticians to design, implement, validate and maintain NGS bioinformatics pipelines for clinical diagnostics and maintain large informatics systems under the direction of the Director of Bioinformatics. This candidate will assist in scaling the rapidly growing genomics platform by building state-of-the-art bioinformatics solutions. The successful candidate will supports clinical operations and lab informatics systems, using on-premises and cloud computing platforms, and assist in all relevant validations and documentation. The position actively supports the Hospital’s and the department’s Continuous Quality Improvement and customer service goals through modeling of appropriate behavior and by providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.
Designs, implements, validates and maintains bioinformatics tools and pipelines for clinical NGS test development.
Develops and implements new QC measures and algorithms into the pipelines, processes or analyses
Assists with the development of standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analyses of clinical tests.
Performs data management, data analysis and other bioinformatics-related tasks in coordination with other computing and bioinformatics staff. Assures that quality control criteria are met.
Supports clinical bioinformatics operations and supports NGS projects in the Department of Pathology at the direction of the Director of Bioinformatics.
Maintains and implements changes to lab informatics systems and other software interfaces.
Follows clinical laboratory procedures and policies in the performance of routine and specialized tasks.
Ensures compliance with CLIA/CAP requirements and adheres to HIPAA regulations for transactions, security and confidentiality.
Adheres to detailed work plans and timelines. Provides timely status reports.
Instructs and trains rotating residents, students, physicians and new members of the laboratory staff as needed.
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
Completes mandatory continuing education and other requirements as defined by the position.
Other job functions as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree with at least two years of programming experience required or PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a related field. Equivalent experience in computational biology will be considered in lieu of relevant degree.
Experience working with NGS datasets is required.
Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, or bash scripting is required.
Programming proficiency in R will be considered as a significant advantage.
Knowledge in machine learning models is a plus.
Familiarity with at least one database language such MySQL, Oracle etc. is preferred.
Self-motivation, with excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and communication (oral and written) skills.
