We are seeking an full-time Research Software Engineer position is available at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), under the supervision of Dr. Anastasia Yendiki. The engineer will join the investigative team of the Large-Scale Imaging of Neural Circuits (LINC) project at MGH (https://connects.mgh.harvard.edu), which is part of the NIH BRAIN Initiative Connectivity across Scales (CONNECTS) program (https://www.ninds.nih.gov/news-events/highlights-announcements/nih-brain-initiative-launches-projects-develop-innovative-technologies-map-brain-incredible-detail). The goal of this program is to produce first-ever maps of brain connections across scales, by combining innovative imaging technologies and machine learning. The software engineer will interface between the LINC team at MGH and academic partner institutions across the CONNECTS network, to support the development of image analysis, visualization, and data sharing infrastructure. The engineer will join a fast-paced, cutting-edge imaging research environment and work closely with researchers from a wide range of backgrounds (e.g., engineering, neuroscience, computer science) to maintain and test existing software and platforms, as well as help implement new solutions.


 

Job Summary

Summary
Responsible for software development, coding and implementation, systems analysis and more within the software development team.
Essential Functions: Designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications, features, and modules according to project requirements and specifications.
-Writes clean, efficient, and high-quality code using programming languages, frameworks, and tools relevant to the project.
-Collaborates with stakeholders, business analysts, and senior engineers to gather requirement, understand user needs, and propose technical solutions.
-Creates and maintains technical documentation, including design documents, architecture diagrams, code comments, and user guides.
-Identifies, debugs, and resolves software defects, performance issues, and compatibility problems through systematic problem-solving techniques.
-Works closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and delivery of software products.
-Stays up-to-date with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices related to software development.


 

Qualifications

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Development responsibilities:

  • Gain enough familiarity with image analysis pipelines developed by CONNECTS investigators (for, e.g., image registration, segmentation, or tractography) to be able to test these pipelines and understand how they work and how they are used

  • Deploy image analysis pipelines on the cloud

  • Ensure compatibility of new pipelines with existing packages and libraries, which may have been developed in a variety of languages (python, matlab, julia, C/C++) and deep learning frameworks (tensorflow, pytorch)

  • Interface with different teams in the CONNECTS network to ensure interoperability of analytic pipelines with different types of data

  • Develop tools for visualizing and annotating the raw image data and/or pipeline derivatives

Test responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute software test plans (e.g., unit and regression tests) on multiple platforms
  • Monitor automated tests, analyze test results, and recommend corrective action

Maintenance and support responsibilities:

  • Package new tools for public distribution
  • Document new tools and support them for users and collaborators
  • Maintain GitHub repositories
  • Fix bugs and enhance features
  • Resolve cross-platform compatibility, installation, and run-time issues

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 

Required:       

  • Competency in Python for back-end and TypeScript (or JavaScript) for front-end development. Applicants will be required to present code samples demonstrating their competency.
  • Competency in Unix shell scripting (bash, csh)
  • Competency in test-driven development
  • Advanced Git and GitHub version control
  • Basic understanding of machine learning/deep learning
  • Ability to understand, troubleshoot, and modify others’ code
  • Ability to debug hard, soft, and compile failures
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to document code and support users

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior work experience in a software engineer capacity in a biomedical image analysis or computer vision research setting: minimum 2 years
  • Programming in Python: minimum 2 years
  • Programming in TypeScript or JavaScript: minimum 1 year
  • Experience in a Unix environment: minimum 1 year
  • Experience with Git and GitHub: minimum 6 months
