Under the direction of the Manager, Linguistics, the Linguist II serves as a vital part of the Serrano Language Revitalization Project (SLRP). This position utilizes a strong knowledge of linguistics, archival resources, lexicography, data science, and the Serrano language to ensure that all language needs are met within the SLRP team, the Department of Education, and the greater Tribal enterprise and community.

Responsible for maintaining the fluency transfer system by providing periodic updates for the teaching of Serrano, this role serves as a key bridge between the linguistic study of Serrano and the implementation of immersion teaching materials and Serrano language resource development. This role regularly works with SLRP team to clearly define all the language needs of the department while championing the educational goals and priorities of the Tribe in a manner that reflects and upholds the Tribal Community’s 2040 Vision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintains and provides updates to the fluency transfer system for the effective instruction of Serrano based upon immersion pedagogies.

2. Supports the creation and revision of all Serrano technical materials such as written, multimedia, apps, archival work and language requests.  Partners with instructors to provide necessary language support materials.  Supports Serrano faculty with the creation of standard set of text corpora for multiple age groups.

3. Creates necessary materials and provides support for all stages of language learning.  Works with Community elders to create material for the language program to support the efforts of language revitalization.

4. Attends department meetings and academic/language-related conferences to stay abreast of modern techniques and skills needed for future needs. Meets with leadership regularly to deliver against the annual goals as articulated in the strategic plan.

5. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

 EDUCATIONAL, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Native American Studies with emphasis in Native American languages, or related field required.

  • Master’s degree in Linguistics preferred.

  • Minimum two (2) years’ direct linguistic experience working with indigenous languages required.

  • Minimum two (2) years’ direct linguistic experience working with Serrano language preferred.

  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience in an educational or academic field with a language other than English preferred.

  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in field related to lexicography and/or pedagogical or educational software development preferred.

  • Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

  • Experience with Native American language(s) as well as knowledge of and sensitivity to local indigenous communities. 

  • Experience with scripting languages (preferably Python or other higher-level languages) is preferred.

  • Experience with research processes, qualitative and quantitative approaches, analysis, and writing skills is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability in or aptitude for Adobe Creative Cloud suite (or similar multimedia, publishing, and audio/video-related software programs), Microsoft Office suite (email, scheduling, and connectivity tools) and other audio/video recording, editing and production tools is preferred.

  • Practical experience in Tribal Community settings with knowledge of Enterprise, Morongo, or other Serrano-speaking communities, history, culture and political structure is strongly preferred.

  • Bilingual speakers with experience in immersive language pedagogy or study in multiple languages, is preferred.

  • Ability to understand and communicate nontraditional uses of academic learning in Native American community settings.

  • Proficient knowledge and experience in computer programs for both Mac and PC environments is required.

  • Must have demonstrated capacity for sustained hard work including capacity for occasional work on weekends or work outside of traditional hours, as required by the department.

  • Must be a self-starter that can develop and plan program objectives and future initiatives, set priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of goals and job responsibilities in flux, and source needed knowledge or materials quickly and efficiently.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS

  • As a condition of employment, candidates and incumbents are required to pass pre- and post-employment screening including Live-Scan, background, drug testing, and tuberculosis (TB) testing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ WORKING CONDITIONS – ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands and working environment described here are representative of those that an employee encounters and must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Primary work environment is in a climate-controlled office setting.

  • Work requires travel to attend meetings, trade shows, and conferences.

  • Incumbents may be required to work evening, weekend and holiday shifts.

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.

  • Strength sufficient to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and/or move up to 40 pounds occasionally.

  • Sedentary work: involves sitting most of the time. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

  • Physical activities that apply to the essential functions of the position are balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

  • Hearing sufficient to hear conversational levels in person, via videoconference and over the telephone.

  • Speech sufficient to make oneself heard and understood in person, in front of groups, in meetings, via videoconference and over the telephone.

  • Visual acuity that meets the requirements of the position: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading and visual inspection of employees, visitors or facility.

  • Mobility sufficient to safely move in an office environment, walk, stoop, bend and kneel, and enter, exit and operate a motor vehicle in the course of travel to promotional events, meetings, conferences, trade shows and San Manuel properties.

  • Endurance sufficient to sit, walk and stand for extended periods, and maintain efficiency throughout the entire work shift and during extended work hours.

  • The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including secondhand smoke.
