Research Engineer – Data Science in Inspection
Are you interested to join our fantastic team at GKN to develop the future of inspection for aerospace parts at the Global Technology Center (GTC) in Trollhättan?
Driven by the vision of sustainable aerospace innovation, GKN Aerospace develops new design concepts for lower weight and integrated functionality for future aviation. The Global Technology Center develops the next generation designs, materials, manufacturing methods and inspection solutions for GKN Engines. The department of Composite & Inspection Technology now has an open position for a Research Engineer – Data Science for Inspection.
We are looking to strengthen our inspection technology team with an engineer who has the expertise and is motivated to develop and enhance data acquisition and analysis methods for the inspection of aerospace engine parts. The Inspection Technology Team at GKN creates innovative techniques to inspect GKN's future products, and strives to enhance the capability and productivity of existing inspection processes. In this role, you will work with various sensor types as the source of inspection data, and develop digital solutions for its analysis and utilization. A key area is the in-process monitoring of additive manufacturing processes as well as post-build inspection.
Job Responsibilities
We are looking for a strong interest in developing, implementing and using data analysis methods for the inspection aerospace engine parts. This concerns both inspection data from the product / process development phase and from inspection systems that are being developed for production. Your key responsibility will be to understand the output data of different sensor types and generate insights from it. The goal is usually to automate the data analysis process, and to embed it into an application. You will understand the source of the data you work with, both in terms of sensors and inspected product.
The core area of your work comprise process monitoring and post-build inspection in additive manufacturing. Furthermore, you will be working with machine vision and automation of inspection for methods like X-ray, Ultrasound and Thermography.
Depending on your interest, you can work with many aspects of automated inspection systems. This can include programming of robots, cobots, drive units and sensors, as well as creating interfaces between those.
You will be able to learn from experienced colleagues from research and production. Curiosity and creativity will be required to invent new ways of working with the data produced by various inspection methods and sensor types. As is natural to research, you will be free in how to conduct your work and manage your time. You should therefore be intrinsically motivated and have a sense of ownership for your work.
You will be working mainly at the NDT-Lab at PTC, Trollhättan, Sweden.

Desired:
• Proficiency in Swedish
• Experience in software development, version control and deployment (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience with setting up databases, using SQL or MongoDB
• Experience in UI design and implementation for data visualization
• Experience with industrial communication protocols, such as OPC-UA or MQTT
Personal Skills
• Ownership: You feel responsible for your work and want to progress, driven by your intrinsic motivation to solve problems that were never solved before
• Creativity: You are independent of established processes and instructions, and find innovative solutions to a problem yourself based on structured investigations.
• Communication Skills: The ability to clearly and effectively communicate ideas and feedback. You have good social skills, the ability to create effective networks and can take on technical responsibility
• Collaboration: Willingness to work with others and contribute to team success. You like to work in a Research & Technology environment with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
• Adaptability: Flexibility in adjusting to new challenges and environments.
